It is accessible to readers who have taken college-level courses in calculus and probability, networking and operating systems. This is not a training manual for becoming an expert performance analyst. Rather, the objective is to help the reader construct simple models for analyzing and understanding the systems that they are interested in.
Describing a complicated system abstractly with mathematical equations requires a careful choice of assumptions and approximations. They make the model tractable, but they must not remove essential characteristics of the system, nor introduce spurious properties.
To help the reader understand the choices and their implications, this book discusses the analytical models for 30 research papers. These papers cover a broad range of topics: processors and disks, routers and crawling, databases and multimedia, worms and wireless, multicore and cloud, etc. An appendix provides many questions for readers to exercise their understanding of the models in these papers.

Nice book for performance modeling and queueing

Performance modelers know the value of queueing results.
But some queueing theorists do not realize how much queueing
is embedded in a book on performance analysis. They should.
This book is different. It is short at 123 pp. The author lists 30
journal papers that he references and uses as examples.
To see the actual content of the 30 papers, the reader should search
the web to obtain copies. This is an unusual writing technique. It
keeps the book short (and inexpensive), but it is slightly less
convenient. Queueing results are presented throughout the book,
with few proofs. Much of the book is taken up with discussion of the
30 papers and how they fit into the topics of the chapter. I was left with
the impression that I was ready to contribute new research to the
performance analysis area after reading this short book. Congratulations
on covering so many topics in such a short space. The book seems to
be well written and technically correct.
