Nicky Gumbel is Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, the largest Anglican church in Britain with a regular attendance of around 4,000 people. He is the pioneer of the Alpha course, a 15-session introduction to the Christian faith now running all over the world.

Solid presentation of 7 tough objections

Nicky Gumbel covers 7 "big" objections to the Christian faith in this little book. The 7 being:

- Suffering
- Other Religions
- Sex Before Marriage
- The New Age
- Homosexuality
- Science & Christianity
- The Trinity

I felt he covered some of the issues better than others. In particular, I enjoyed the chapters on "Science & Christianity" and "The New Age" giving me information I previously lacked.

Some of the chapters provided me with confidence that my own thinking on the matter was aligned, particularly "Sex before Marriage" and "Homosexuality".

And then there were a couple that I was a little disappointed in. In particular, "Suffering" I felt was written to a Christian audience rather than a non-believer. I don't think Gumbel addressed the issue of "why is suffering happening to me?" Yes, it may be the fact that someone is exercising their choose to be hurtful and cruel, so, for example, when crimes are committed against others. But I don't think he addressed the perspective of the person suffering. Yes, a crime was committed by why on them?

But a very useful small book that I expect I will refer to again on some of the matters covered.

Definitely worth a read.

Note: I read the 1998 edition so this 2011 updated version may have addressed some of my concerns.

Poisonous book

Whatever good you feel has been done by the Alpha course, Mr. Gumbel demonstrates in this book his poisonous homophobia. I was recommended this book in the mid-90s and was shocked to read it. I am afraid that people who have been inspired by Alpha will pick up this book and believe it is all right to be mean-spirited and prejudiced against people because of their sexual orientation, since that is what Mr. Gumbel expounds on here. Shame on him. This is not what the world needs.

About the Author

Wayne Connell’s experience includes that of a professional, multitasking husband caregiver with an extensive background in management, media and technology. He obtained a BA in Television & Radio Broadcasting and Computer Information Systems from Colorado Christian University. Wayne has additional training in business and public speaking. He also is an avid writer and top 10 blogger on Disability.gov’s Disability Blog.

Sherri Connell was an extremely active person who loved her careers, singing and dancing in musicals, riding her horse and lifting weights. In college, she studied Music Theatre, and then obtained 2 Bachelor Degrees in Business with a Minor in Liberal Arts.

Although Sherri had enormous plans for her life, just as she was plotting out her Master's Degree, she was stopped in her tracks at the age of 27. Starting with another winter bout of pneumonia, Sherri became paralyzed, so sick she could barely sit up and was in horrible pain. She was hospitalized and diagnosed with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and Late-Chronic Lyme Disease.

Suddenly, she went from "on the go" 24/7 to struggling just to get to a doctor's appointment or take a shower. In addition to MS and Lyme Disease, Sherri lives with Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), multiple food allergies, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Wayne married Sherri in 1994. People are surprised when they find out Wayne asked Sherri to marry him, despite her disabilities. Wayne just knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Sherri, even if it meant dealing with pain and suffering. However, Wayne had no idea that his decision would lead to having a heart for all who live with chronic illness and pain.

Wayne's desire to help others who struggle with disabilities has become a passion for him. Wayne has seen so many friends and families torn apart by chronic conditions. This is why he founded the organization, the Invisible Disabilities Association (www.InvisibleDisabilities.org).

I cant say enough good things about this book! Great perspective from sides. I learned alot about how others might be thinking or feeling about my illness. I ordered copies for my children. Several of my family and friends read the book and they said it really taught them alot! Great book!

"I miss me" and other key concepts of invisible conditions explained right here

For anyone who has a loved one with an invisible condition or suffer with one themselves, this book is the answer to the questions asked. I'm going to share this book with those that day the understand and don't and with those that clearly don't get it. I often say "I miss me" and when I saw that phrase in the book, I knew I want alone. This is a book to gift to others. Give it away and help educate the masses that really don't "get it."

A book I recommend for anyone with an "invisible illness" to give to their family to read so that they know how they should handle your illness. It might help them when they want to tell you how great you look and don't understand how horrible you can feel since you look so good. Or how they don't understand why you cannot do something when you look so good. I would buy copies and give them out as a Christmas gift to your family, the more knowledge they have into how you are feeling the better. After all knowledge is power!!

Designed to catch the eye

The first sixty-seven pages of this lavish book are four illustrated essays on deco jewelry but basically from a French perspective (it was originally published by Editions Norma, Paris). One by Arlette Barre: 'Captivating the world', nicely covers the wider aspects of the subject and the connection to the various art 'isms' of the first thirty-five years of the last century and the importance of the 1925 Paris International Exposition.

Another essay intriguingly considers jewelry and graphic design (plus typography) but looking through the pages at rings, bracelets, pendants and vanity cases I can see a connection between the flat graphics of posters and deco book covers of the period. Jean Fouquet and Gerard Sandoz work captures this feel perfectly. So much of the jewelry here is a clear contrast to the Art Deco bronze and ivory statues of Chiparus, Descomps or Preiss with their precise detail of dancer's costumes and females faces.

After the essays the rest of the book considers eighteen designers and companies who probably produced the world's finest deco jewelry between 1910 and 1937. Each name gets several pages with an essay and photos (mostly color) of their work which are all captioned though oddly without any dimensions for the pieces.

'Art Deco jewelry' is an excellent look at this particular creative art but also worth considering is a book with the same title by Sylvie Raulet published as a chunky paperback in 2002 with 792 photos (261 in color).

This book is a MUST! I didnt want to take any prep classes or go through college courses for my CLAD, so I opted to take the CTEL exam. All I did was read this book from cover to cover--THAT'S IT. Everything I needed to know was in this book! I passed all three sections in one day, first time. I didnt do any other prepping; no class, no online practice test--just read a chapter a night the two weeks before I took it. I picked this book based on other's reviews, and THEY WERE RIGHT! Do yourself a favor and get this book if you are taking the CTEL.

Don't read this to your kids!

What an excellent read! I have read many DW novels but this is by far the best. Not only are the Daleks truly terrifying in this, much more so than they were ever portrayed in video, what is done to the Doctor almost had me in tears (and this from a 50 year old fangirl!) Ten is my doctor and to see him suffer at the hands (plungers and whisks) of the Daleks was almost too much to bear. A very complicated novel in that there is a lot of characters, many losses and truly graphic scenario's. It is the one DW book I would not hesitate to reread and that is saying a lot. You won't be sorry if you get this, believe me! PS I am now listening to the audible version of the book just to hear Briggs read it. He is excellent with his interpretation of all the different marvelous characters that were so magnificently written. When you finish reading the book listen to it. Utterly fantastic!!!

Postscript

I have now reread this twice and re-listened to it again and still love it, maybe even more so now. This should be required reading for every Whovian or on the fence, might be Whovians out there. You don't merely read (or listen) to this book so as devour it!

The closest shave ever!! Edge of your seat reading

From the very first chapter the Doctor was thrown off course (so to speak) and from that moment onwards he was pulled or thrust into one helpless situation to another. Throughout the book I was constantly wondering "What next? What else could go wrong?" and "How's he gonna get out of this one?" I currently have over 35 Dr Who books in my Kindle's library...yet this is my first review. This one was a whopper! Some of these story lines are rather predictable. Not this one. Well, maybe after you read this...

*** WARNING!! *** Very mild SPOILERS!!
The tale begins when the Doctor finds himself taken back into the Daleks history, at a time shortly before a great war between Humans & Daleks goes head to head. Finding himself trapped & rescued by the not altogether friendly, neighbourhood Dalek catchers, the Doctor soon finds himself in a situation beyond his control. And there's many more to follow.

The Doctor remains in the company of these Dalek hunters (who are still undefined as friend or foe) as he embarks on the latest solo adventure - confronting the ugly face of war, discovering the latest Dalek attempt to wipe humans from *time* (hint, hint) & space and then staying alive long enough to save humanity, preferably in time for tea and crumpets.

This is a tale of an abandoned TARDIS, deception, ambush, death, bluffs, war crimes/torture, uneasy truces, uncertain allies, plots to take over space & time...and of course, running.. This was one of the closest shaves the Doctor has encountered in my time - loved every moment of it.

New characters and new adventure

I became a whovian recently and I have really been absorbed in the Doctor. So when I finished all tv episodes, I began to find novels. And I found this.
Personaly I prefer new characters who don't know about the Doctor and tardis. Because I like the moment when the Doctor reveals himself and then every other characters are astonished except me :) I even feel a bit proud, little bit childish though..
Anyway in this novel, there are 5 new living characters who have each traits and courage. And most of all, the author completely understands the Doctor's character so you might be confused whether you are watching tv or reading it.
And I also purchsed its audio book and I really enjoyed it. The narrator can speak almost alike tenth doctor's accent and the book has lots of daleck's grated voice :)
Although I am not good at english but I really could enjoy this novel. And if you choose this one you would not regret!
