This book is SUPERB!

I'm currently an Internet Software Engineer, using primarily Servlets and EJB technologies, and I was hoping to find a book that could give me a good reason to consider using JSPs. THIS IS THE BOOK. I now completely understand the purpose of JSPs, and where they fit into the Java Architecture. You will too, once you read this book.
Phil Hanna has compiled a superbly organized and useful book. He builds on concepts logically, and provides awesome examples to help the info sink in. (I can't over-emphasize the usefulness of the examples in this book!) The examples of using JSP Tag Extensions are particularly wonderful. This is perhaps the most confusing and powerful part of JSPs, and Mr. Hanna makes it SO much easier to understand.
If you want to learn JSPs and add them to your arsenal of programming wizardry, look no further! I wish that all of the technical books in my library were written this well.

Introduction

You might be asking yourself, what can this book do for me? Will it provide new and useful information? Can it help me make a change for the better? Will I age any slower? The answer is this book can teach you a unique, science-based model of health, disease, and aging that will provide you with the keys to controlling the aging process.

I will explain why we age, and the difference between healthy, normal aging and the disease-filled, accelerated aging most ­people experience today. I will show you how health and disease really work, and how you can enter your later years confident and in control with the power to enjoy abundant health and vitality until the very end. In short, this book has the potential to transform and enhance your life in ways you may have never dreamed possible.

Why do we fear old age? For most of us, it is not death itself, but 'getting old' that stirs a feeling of dread in us. We imagine a life of declining health, a weak and fragile body, diminished mental capacity, and the ultimate indignity of having to depend on others to function on a daily basis. This is an image of a life not worth living―something we would all like to avoid or at least put off as long as possible.

Why then are most of us doing everything in our power to hasten its arrival?

That's right. As a culture, we are accelerating the aging process at an alarming rate, and it is costing us immeasurable losses in quality and enjoyment in the later decades of our lives. We develop chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis when we should be in good health. We become disabled when we could be capable and strong. Most of us die prematurely of preventable and curable diseases.

Aging this way is a mistake. It is a mistake made moment by moment and day by day throughout our lives. It is a mistake caused by choices made for us as children and choices we make for ourselves as adults. As a result, we now have thirty-year-olds who exhibit biological markers that are typical of eighty-year-olds. Overweight ten-year-olds are showing biological aging that is typical of forty-five-year-olds.

Talk about accelerated aging! If children are biologically forty-five at age ten, what will they be when they are fifty? American children today are so far from optimal health, they are projected to be the first generation in more than two hundred years that will have shorter lives than those of their parents.

Unfortunately, many of us take better care of our cars than we do of our bodies. We wouldn't think of putting salt in the radiator, soybean oil in the engine, or corn syrup in the gas tank. Nor would we drive with the brakes on, switch into reverse while barreling down the highway, or bang into everything that happens to be in our way. Everybody knows that these reckless actions would cause severe damage to a car. Yet, day after day, year after year, many of us are similarly careless in how we treat our bodies.

We load the grocery cart with processed foods, wash down fast food with supersized sodas, suffer increasing levels of stress without an outlet, reach for something―anything―to feel better, stare for hours at one screen or another, and then hit the sack for too few hours of fitful sleep. Few of us realize that living like this for years may be sentencing us to a life of high medical bills, invasive surgeries, and chronic and degenerative diseases, leading to an untimely death. Unlike a car, we can't trash our body and then just get a new one.

If you choose a typical modern diet and lifestyle and do not intend to make any changes, you are choosing the path of accelerated aging and untimely death. However, if you are willing to take a serious look at the way you eat, the way you move, and the way you live, and then make some adjustments, you can in fact achieve total health and never feel old again.

You Can Be Younger than Your Years

You see, it is entirely possible to be biologically younger than your chronological age, and that is exactly what this book is about. Being biologically younger than your years is easier to achieve than you might think, because the human body is a self-repairing system. It is designed to keep you fully functional and in good health for a long lifetime. All you have to do is supply the body with what it needs to keep up its own maintenance. The dreaded symptoms of aging that many of us have come to see as normal are nothing but a disease of repair deficits. A poorly maintained car ends up in a junkyard, and a poorly maintained body ends up in a nursing home.

This does not have to happen to you!

There are entire societies, such as the Himalayan Hunzas and the Japanese Okinawans, who have been able to enjoy excellent health and vitality into an advanced old age. There are also many individuals who achieve this, regardless of the culture around them.

One outstanding example is Jack LaLanne, an icon of modern physical fitness. LaLanne set out to prove that age was no obstacle to great physical performance. He ate a healthy diet and exercised every day of his life, until he died in 2011 at age ninety-six. He drew worldwide attention for swimming from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco at age sixty while handcuffed, shackled, and pulling a thousand-pound boat. At age seventy, he towed seventy boats carrying seventy people through Long Beach Harbor while handcuffed and shackled once again.

I myself am in my mid-seventies, but I am in excellent shape both physically and mentally. My arteries, and the medical odds of my having a heart attack or stroke, match those of a man in his mid-twenties. I never get sick. I have had only two colds in the last twenty-seven years. I have no arthritis, no hip or knee replacements, and no artificial implements anywhere in my body. I have no cataracts or macular degeneration in my eyes. I take no drugs. I am mentally sharp and full of energy. Do you remember being a kid and having so much energy you didn't know what to do with it all? That's how I feel at seventy-six.

How This Book Can Help You

In this book, I will show you how to take control of your health and reduce your biological age. Virtually all aging our society experiences today is premature. Yet premature aging is not natural or inevitable; it is a disease of deferred maintenance. In fact, I will explain that, regardless of symptoms, there really is only one disease, and that this one disease only has two causes. Approaching aging as a disease caused by repair deficits empowers you to maintain and rejuvenate your body at the cellular level. It is entirely possible to live a longer life and to greatly reduce the risk of age-related diseases―if you know the factors that accelerate aging and avoid them. Even Better Than His First Book

This is one of the great ones. It's even better than Never Be Sick Again, which I thought was a health masterpiece. Like the first book, he may be a bit over the top for some folks with his take on environmental toxins. After all, we can't live in a plastic bubble. But he knows whereof he speaks, so it behooves us to listen to him.

We've heard a lot of this before. Mr. Francis just does it so much better than many others. Surprisingly, he's not a vegan. He does eat some meat, though he advocates consuming smaller portions of free-range, no-antibiotic animal products. Also, he does not advocate processed foods of any kind.

He has here left out his personal story, which he gave in the first book. I suppose he didn't feel it bore repetition, though I have to say it is one hell of a story. He literally went through hell when he had his own health crisis. And, like others, he had to figure out what was going on with himself and what to do about it. It's one of the greatest healing stories I've ever read.

Don't pass up on this health masterpiece or, for that matter, his first book either. You might never be the same.

Yet another grand slam. This guy speaks " in my language". Straight, to the point, easy to read. It has just the right amount of science to support the information without crossing my eyes in confusion. It's my favorite book on the subject of health and a must read.

This book says it all

Throughout this book I kept nodding my head...Yes...this is right on. The author tells in plain language how to avoid all the toxins and other negative factors that impinge on our health every day. The standard American diet causes the increase in illnesses of all kinds, whether it's been genetically modified, laced with high fructose corn syrup, contains way too much sugar, grown on depleted soil, sprayed with poisonous chemicals, and been treated with antibiotics and growth hormone. No wonder everyone is degenerating! Then the problem is compounded by taking drugs that might tame symptoms but do nothing about the cause and are toxic to cells. If readers will take the author's advice and resolve to change their dietary habits, the result will be much improved health and more years to enjoy living.

About the Author

YORAM (JERRY) WIND is the Lauder Professor and Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School and the founding Director of the Wharton SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management, the Wharton Fellows program and co-founder of the Wharton Future of Advertising Program. He led the development of the Wharton globalization strategy, the creation of the Wharton Executive MBA program, as well as the reinvention of its curriculum. He has received numerous marketing awards, including the Buck Weaver Award (2007), the Charles Coolidge Parlin Award (1985), AMA/ Irwin Distinguished Educator Award (1993), and the Paul D. Converse Award (1996).

CATHARINE FINDIESEN HAYS is the founding Executive Director of the Wharton Future of Advertising Program, a leading research center bridging practitioners and academia. She earned her graduate degrees at Wharton and Penn as a Lauder Fellow and led pioneering marketing, strategy and sales teams during a 15-year career at AT&T. This is some welcome and overdue thinking for an industry that is more resistant to digital change than most. Advertising and marketing are faced with the classic innovator's dilemma and the authors and contributors provide many useful insights, ideas, and most important, frameworks for re-thinking the business.

Badly needed guidance for the new age of media and marketing

About the Author
The first play in D. C. Jackson's 'Stewarton Trilogy' for Borderline Theatre Company, The Wall, won the Best Ensemble at the 2007-8 Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland and was shortlisted for the Saltire Society/ Royal Mail Scottish First Book of the Year Award. It was followed by The Ducky in 2009. The Chooky Brae completed the trilogy in 2010. My Romantic History was staged earlier in the same year by the Bush Theatre and Sheffield Crucible. He has also had short plays produced by Oran Mor (Matinee Idle, Drawing Bored, Out on the Wing and Company Policy) and the Arches Theatre Company (Hello, part of Spend a Penny). He is working on new plays for BBC Radio 4, the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Court, and was the Pearson Writer in Residence at the Royal Court for 2008.

A Quick Shot of Motivation

I downloaded this book after I heard the author on John Lee Dumas' podcast, "Entrepreneur on Fire". I was so impressed by Jesse's articulate and thoughtful answers (and the calm demeanor that he sustained in spite of JLD's high level of intensity) that I knew I would appreciate his approach to this topic. I was also intrigued by the fact that he wrote and published it as a challenge to himself in 7 days.
As you would expect from any book that takes 3 days to write, it's a fairly quick read and doesn't dive deep into any one topic which was appropriate in this case. I loved the pace of the book and it actually makes me want to commit to a similar challenge. If you're lacking in motivation, this book will inspire you to move forward.
Jesse makes a convincing case that hustle is best sustained through momentum. He gives plenty of examples for each of his points and just as important, he defines what hustle ISN'T.
What surprised me most is how few typos, grammatical and structural errors. The book was well-organized and flowed well. It was clearly written and succinct, which I always appreciate.

You can't miss this book!

I have read numerous books classified as "Business" and books classified as "Personal Growth" and this book is one that melds these two classifications into a very readable and more importantly doable formula for a reader to develop their own "hustle"

It's a quick read but it is packed with useful information covering; habits, marketing, organization, communication, relationships and more. While I would say books intended audience are entrepreneurs much of the content would apply to daily living for anyone.

The book doesn't dive deep into any specific topic but adequately covers a wide range of related topics weaving each into the "Hustle" narrative resulting in a well crafted book that pulls together ideas and strategies that make you feel, "I can do this".

The references at the end of the book are worth the price of the book by themselves. The content is presented in a manner that reads well, and is coherent. I'd write more but I need to get started on my own Hustle.

Can't believe Jesse wrote this book in a week

Jesse has a lot of great tips in this book that make it both inspiring and actionable.

I think that "Hustle" focuses more on the process of producing a book, but its an experience we can all learn from anyways. It takes a lot of effort to write this many words and edit and market it and have it rate as highly as it does. There are so many things that hold us back, but I think this serves as a good reminder that larger feats are still possible even in short amounts of time.

It doesn't offer anything revolutionary, but it was a fun read and definitely hammers down on the fundamentals of hustling -- which is essentially putting 100% into life.

Too much Theory, not much repair.

I was hoping for more practical hands on repair in print & pictures. I've found their
are almost no spare parts available for VCRs. No one wants to fix them either.
Ebay has almost a hundred on open bid at any one time. My ebay
purchase turned out as a bad sound problem & money down the drain. The big
demand for VCR's have NTSC(analog)TV tuners built in them which makes the average age
about 1996 & buying one is a crap shoot. You still can get New VCRs via Amazon & that I recommend.
Its better to buy a ATSC(digital) TV tuner stand alone box with a stand alone VCR for best results.

Paul Kleinman grew up in White Plains, New York, and currently resides in New York City. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2009 with degrees in art and communication arts. His previous work includes Freudian theory published by McSweeney's, The Bullsh*t Artist, and A Ton of Crap.

I loved it, but...4.5 stars

THE GOOD
This is a wonderful overview of modern, Western psychology including: major contributors to psychology, major areas/overarching theories, important experiments, succinct definitions (e.g. from DSM III), etc. The explanations are concise and easily understood. It's a hardback (good to keep as a reference work) in the size of a paperback. The style is matter of fact and seemingly unbiased overall. The author also provides short biographical sketches of major people in psychology, and attempts to tie their background/upbringing into the rationales of their theories.

THE BAD
In an overview of this type, some things are left out, however, I would suggest at least a small reference to these overlooked items:

Psychological Assessment--Minnesota MultiPhasic Inventory (MMPI), Jungian psychological types (esp. the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory or MBTI, the most given test in history); assessment by graphic means including art therapy & the Bender-Gestalt--I studied these in Doctoral courses at George Washington University in DC), and the Management Grid--which I found quite useful as a Supervisor/Manager.

Psychological Treatment/Therapy--Behavioral Modification (very effective way to treat symptoms); and sand play therapy

Management Practices-- Situational Leadership II by Zigarmy, Blanchard, and Zigarmy--which I found quite useful as a Supervisor/Manager. It combines both learning and a logical approach for both employees and supervisors.

THE UGLY

Errors--p. 123: the book says that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is serial--one can't overlap the levels, but this is not what Maslow said in "The Further Reaches of Human Nature" though it may have been the original version of his theory. Rorschach inkblots are included as color plates (which is great) but they are in the wrong place (between pages 128 & 129) since Rorschach is described (with short card interpretations) on pp. 65-72, and p. 128: IQ brackets here differ markedly from my recollection from college (maybe it was DSM I? hard to believe; my recollection is DSM II).

Biases--while the author avoids (as far as I can tell) inserting his own biases (kudos to him!), he does point out the recent cultural biases affecting psychology, without comment. He justifiably points out that many prior experiments, e.g. Milgram & Carney Landis, are considered "unethical" by the American Psychological Association today--but this point of view is itself biased (Political Correctness is a bias), and assumes that the ends don't justify the means. This is not only silly, but unscientific. This bias violates almost all of p. 204: Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy's Ten Cognitive Distortions--e.g.:

Overgeneralization: using an isolated situation and broadly assuming all others are the same way"
Disqualifying the positive: Acting as if events that are positive do not count. [e.g. psychological knowledge]
All or nothing thinking: Only thinking in terms of absolutes and not recognizing there can be middle ground.
Emotional Reasoning: Instead of looking at a situation objectively by studying the faces, a person lets his or her emotions govern his or her thoughts on the situation, as well as Jumping to Conclusions, Magnification and Minimization, Mental Filter, Should Statements, Labeling and Mislabeling.

While Kleinman cites the improvements in DSM III by adding statistics to it to offset the findings of the Rosenhan Experiments (though he may not realize that statistics are only information; they're not knowledge), he ignores how many psychological theories he's presented apply to the DSM and APA. To wit, p. 30: Anna Freud's ego defenses, p. 49: "Groupthink--When a group agrees on most issues, there is a tendency to stifle any dissent...can be disastrous because it leads to a failure to listen to or identify all sides of an argument and can result in impulsive decisions...to combat groupthink, authentic dissent should be nurtured," pp. 197-8: "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy--the individual can begin to understand what feelings and thoughts influence their behavior...people do not simply get upset, but will become so as a result of having inflexible beliefs," p. 199: Albert Ellis' Rational Therapy or Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy--"For a person to be emotionally healthy, they must accept reality, even if this reality is unpleasant" [avoid value judgments], p. 219: Erich Fromm's Automaton Conformity, p. 272: Lee Ross' Cognitive Biases: False Consensus & Uniqueness Effects--"False consensus...to think that our opinions and beliefs are the common opinions and beliefs amongst everyone else...False uniqueness--people underestimate how common their abilities and desirable attributes are. [Lee Ross' experiments] show that people have the tendency to judge how everyone else should make decisions based on how they, themselves, would make a decision [~self-serving biases], p. 273: "One of the most startling examples of the false consensus effect can be seen in the negative viewpoints found in fundamentalists and political radicals. While these people do not necessarily think that most people have their radical viewpoints and beliefs, they do overestimate the number of those that do, which further twists their perceptions of the world around them,"

and worst of all--p.240: The Rosenhan Experiments with pseudo-patients admitted to psychiatric hospitals--"according to Rosenhan, this 2nd study demonstrated that psychiatrists are unable to reliably differentiate between a sane person and an insane person...anything a patient does is then interpreted in relation to this psychiatric label" which the APA would find (in a very IMHO self-serving way) unethical because the experimenter lied to the subjects. Having taken several doctoral level Social Psychology courses at George Washington University, it seems to me that these hyper-ethical reactions would essentially preclude research into Social Psychology.

As a scientist (retired physicist, electronics engineer, systems engineer, project engineer, etc.) , I must say that the dichotomous view of nature (the exclusive OR) is absurd--i.e. that either the ends justify the means or they don't. Both imply violations of the non-allness principle. The TRUTH is that virtually every decision is an ends-means decision and that sometimes the ends justify the means and sometimes they don't. The APA, IMHO should strive towards being more scientific and inclusive IMHO. Good judgment doesn't go out of style.

Wow!

I am a psychology grad, and always enjoy reading psychology based books. When this book arrived I was a little shocked at the size (it is small), but once I opened it up and started reading I changed my mind. This book is perfect for anyone who has any questions about psychology. For instance if you have heard about a particular person or idea on how people behave and why this book will help you understand. It also skips most of the stuff that would make pyschology dull. It covers everything in a short and descriptive manner. In my case it was a great refresher book that I will keep close by to reference back to. A great book for everyone. It will not disappoint.
