Best Method I Have Seen To Enhance My Guitar Playing

Over the years I have had many instructional books and all of them have gone unused in time with very little added to my playing ability. After going through this book I have gained so much knowledge in understanding my options in soloing because let's face it every guitarist has felt that rut and one point in their playing where the constant repetitive solos begins to be maddening. This book opened my eyes to much more and I would recommend it to everyone out there.

Mr. Auer has accomplished the impossible -- getting me to understand the theory and science behind the pentatonic and its various modes (who knew?) without making my brain hurt. When he writes in his introduction something like "no more randomly hitting notes and hoping they sound right" he is describing me pre working with this book. I've been the ultimate lead hack, just noodling around the neck, which is fine when playing background for a supportive wife, but embarrassing as hell when playing with other guitarists. I'm not yet Jeff Beck, but now I "get it" and there is now some method to what was previously just madness. Highly recommend.

The information builds on itself until you are doing things you didn't think you were capable of. Also, I have always been confused by Modes. Good textbook, but you must be otherwise very familiar with QFT

I am working through this book now and just about to finish part II.

If I am not mistaken, this is currently the only book dealing exclusive with the subject of quantum phase transition.

A basic recurring theme is: at T=0 you have a critical point and two (quantum) phases on two sides. Add a little temperature, and you gets a few thermally-excited quasiparticles above the ground state on either side of the critical point. Except when you are immediately above the critical point, where the quasiparticle picture breaks down.

Sachdev systematically treats each model in the same way. First he would establish the behaviors of the two zero-T phases, and then discuss the finite-T region where the physics can be described by quasiparticles, and finally treat the quantum critical regime. Having a unifying structure makes grasping the concept easier.

That said, Sachdev does assume a very good foundation in QFT. It is commonplace in the book where he just defines an action, states that he is going to integrate out such-and-such, and then slaps the end result on you straightaway. You will have a really hard time making sense of what he wrote if you have just finished the standard one-year sequence of QFT.

(If you can do most of the problems in Peskin/Schoeder without refering to the book or your notes, you are good to go.)

Bottom line: be prepared for many omitted derivations and missing steps. Four stars, still. At least Sachdev provides a coherent direction, and I have seen books much more incomprehensible.

GREEK PHILOSOPHY - A Critical History of Greek Philosophy by W. T. Stace - This book contains the substance, and for the most part the words, of a course of public lectures delivered during the first three months of 1919. The original division into lectures has been dropped, the matter being more conveniently redivided into chapters. The audience to whom the lectures were delivered was composed of members of the general public, and not only of students. For the most part they possessed no previous knowledge of philosophy. Hence this book, like the original lectures, assumes no previous special knowledge, though it assumes, of course, a state of general education in the reader. Technical philosophical terms are carefully explained when first introduced; and a special effort has been made to put philosophical ideas in the clearest way possible. But it must be remembered that many of the profoundest as well as the most difficult of human conceptions are to be found in Greek philosophy. Such ideas are difficult in themselves, however clearly expressed. No amount of explanation can ever render them anything but difficult to the unsophisticated mind, and anything in the nature of "philosophy made easy" is only to be expected from quacks and charlatans. Greek philosophy is not, even now, antiquated. It is not from the point of view of an antiquary or historian that its treasures are valuable. We are dealing here with living things, and not with mere dead things--not with the dry bones and debris of a bygone age. And I have tried to lecture and write for living people, and not for mere fossil-grubbers. If I did not believe that there is to be found here, in Greek philosophy, at least a measure of the truth, the truth that does not grow old, I would not waste five minutes of my life upon it.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Greek philosophy written in a clear and compelling way by one of the 20th century's most important philosophers. I'm glad that this text has been reissued in this attractive format, because my old hardcover version was falling apart. I find myself constantly referring back to this text whenever I need to check on some issue related to an ancient philosopher or ancient philosophical school. Quite simply, a philosophical classic.

wonderful book.

Based on lectures delivered ca. 1920, this critical history of Greek philosophy was very good, and promoted a good and basic understanding of the beginnings of philosophy, and it would seem that Greek philosophy is the beginning of all subsequent philosophy. I enjoyed reading this book and gained a lot of knowledge from it about philosophy, especially taking into consideration that my area is history and literature.

Very interesting reading in an area that was sadly neglected in my educational experience. It's a pity I took the free copy - it lacks a table of contents but it's short enough to search by page as necessary.

About the Author
Professor Froeb received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. When the antitrust agencies began using his models to predict the competitive effects of mergers, his academic research passed what he calls "a market test." This resulted in his 2003 appointment to Chief Economist of the Federal Trade Commission where he enforced the antitrust and consumer protection laws of the United States. He also managed 75 economists who tore down barriers to competition (often erected by well-meaning bureaucrats). In July 2005 Dr. Froeb returned to Vanderbilt University where today he holds the William Oehmig Chair of Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise. He used to win the "Most Outstanding Teacher" award, but now he finishes behind his co-author, Brian McCann. His textbook, MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS: A PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH is well recognized for teaching students to apply economics to real business problems. It is filled with real world problems (and solutions) from Professor Froeb's students and clients. Dr. Froeb's research focuses on the economics of competition policy. He has taught at Tulane University, worked at the U.S. Department of Justice, and spent a year at the University of Chicago Law School.

Dr. Brian T. McCann has taught courses in managerial economics, strategic management, and entrepreneurship at the undergraduate, MBA and executive education levels. He holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University where he earned the Founder's Medal as the top graduate of the class. Dr. McCann received his doctoral training in strategic management at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management where he was awarded the Ross Fellowship, the Krannert Certificate for Distinguished Teaching, and the Purdue Research Foundation Research Grant. His more than 10 years of industry experience include operating a residential land development company, serving as the CFO for an Internet start-up, and implementing new strategic initiatives for a non-profit economic development group. In addition to co-authoring this MBA-level textbook in managerial economics, Dr. McCann's work has appeared or is forthcoming in journals, such as STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, and JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES. His current research interests span strategic management and entrepreneurship and include the performance implications of firm agglomeration, the effects of ownership structure on competitive behaviors, and the role of threshold-based decision making in the entrepreneurial process.

Dr. Mike Ward has taught courses in Managerial Economics, Industrial Organization and Business Strategy, Human Resource Economics, and Economics and Regulation of Information. He has spent nearly two decades in academia, holding positions at the University of Illinois and the University of Texas at Arlington where he is currently Professor of Economics in the Business School. Prior to returning to academia, Professor Ward served as an Economist at the Federal Trade Commission for four years attempting to tear down barriers to competition (though he was not managed by Professor Froeb). Dr. Ward's research focuses on the economics of innovation and competition. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics and economics from UCLA and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Mike Shor has taught courses in game theory, pricing, law and economics, industrial organization, and behavioral economics. He is currently at the Department of Economics at the University of Connecticut. Prior to UConn, Professor Shor taught at the business school at Vanderbilt University, where he was twice elected the best professor by the graduating MBA class. Dr. Shor earned his undergraduate degree in foreign affairs and economics from the University of Virginia, and his Ph.D. in economics from Rutgers University. Professor Shor's research is focused on industrial organization and behavioral economics. His interdisciplinary research has appeared in journals in accounting, marketing, information systems, and psychology, as well as economics.

Superb!

I will admit to knowing Dr. Froeb which serves to only heighten my praise for this book and his approach to teaching this subject matter. He starts each area of study with real world examples and then expands to broader concepts and economic models so you can relate and apply the concepts. Frankly, all econ textbooks should use this approach as most seem all too mired in academic, theoretical, blather in place of practical, decision-making, applications. It's also a fascinating read for anyone interested in managerial economics, from students to those interested in learning about smart business modeling and analytics. Ultimately, as a B-School student, you want very relevant, career-enhancing, knowledge.

Good thing because they would've cost our company lots of ...

This book has all the answers. And by all I mean, "ALL". I was in a meeting the other day and someone simply mentioned the terms "pivot table" and "drill down". Using my Froebian knowledge I figured they were trying to pull one over. Sure enough they were and had little knowledge over what they said. I promptly ignored and dismissed them. Good thing because they would've cost our company lots of money with their aggressive and ill informed ways.

Excellent text.

I just finished reviewing this book for a managerial economics class I teach for MBAs. This book is great for more applied programs geared towards working professionals and problem-based learning. Very well-written, even for those without a background in economics, but still insightful for those who do. I will likely supplement some of the chapters with more quantitatively-oriented notes since the text is a little light, and I suspect it will work well. :-)

Grand Hotel Abyss combines biography, philosophy, and storytelling to reveal how the Frankfurt thinkers gathered in hopes of understanding the politics of culture during the rise of fascism. Some of them, forced to escape the horrors of Nazi Germany, later found exile in the United States. Benjamin, with his last great work—the incomplete Arcades Project—in his suitcase, was arrested in Spain and committed suicide when threatened with deportation to Nazi-occupied France. On the other side of the Atlantic, Adorno failed in his bid to become a Hollywood screenwriter, denounced jazz, and even met Charlie Chaplin in Malibu.

After the war, there was a resurgence of interest in the School. I wish I had read this extremely well written and informative book when I was twenty five instead of seventy four.
The very engaging and interesting treatment of complex issues holds my attention and certainly increases my grasp of the subject.

Wanted More From The Author

Well written and well researched, however it is not for beginners in critical theory as myself, so I was a bit disappointed. I would have gotten so much more out of the book had I a deeper philosophical background- or if the author sought to reach a broader audience by taking some time to provide it in a more straightforward manner. Nonetheless, it did trigger my curiosity for learning more. The philosophy and ideas coming out of the Frankfurt School deserve some attention as their applicability to current political developments could be quite enlightening. This is what I was hoping for from this book, but it didn't quite deliver.

Well done telling of lives and thought

This book is a well-done combination of the lives of the Frankfurt School theorists and discussions of their major works. Jeffries treats their ideas with due seriousness, but is not afraid to criticize some of their ponderousness or to bring in apposite pop culture references. It's an enjoyable synthesis and recommended.
