Concise, Well Researched Work

This book is a good look at the Lollards and their place in history. The concise work (about 150 pages long) covers Lollard history from John Wycliffe's time at Oxford to the coming of the Protestant reformation. It does a good job of examining Wycliffe, those who protected him, and what exactly his ideas were. It looks at what geographical areas and among which social groups Lollardy was most commonly found. It studies the Lollards that came after Wycliffe, their organization, and how their beliefs differed from the teachings of Wycliffe. It mentions how the monarchy turned against Lollardy, pressured by the Pope and the archbishop, and mentions the persecutions that took place. It concludes with a study of the later Lollards (after 1431) and how they reacted when the ideas of the Reformation made their way to England.

What I like about the book is that it is very up to date. Rex cites all major historical works on the Lollards from the last two decades, and takes into account all their research. He also tells the story as a chronological narrative, but also spends copious amounts of time on the religious ideas of the group. Very good for a student or someone with a general interest on this Late Medieval heretical group.

Malcolm George Wright is an Australian maritime artist who has spent five decades researching ships’ camouflage, making notes while interviewing veterans and consulting official sources, photographs and the work of artists of the era. He lives in Adelaide where he is also the director of the Adelaide Festival of History.

Great for modelers and miniatures painters

Royal Navy ship camouflage during WWII was widely used, constantly changing, and not very standardized until late in the war. Most of the camouflage worn by RN ships was created by the crew of each individual ship, and many ships were quite creative and colorful. So reference photographs and illustrations are needed for every individual ship at different times during the war. As a miniatures painter/wargamer I am always looking for good camouflage references. This book is a treasure trove of detailed camouflage illustrations for Royal Navy carriers and battleships in WWII. The print quality is excellent and the detail is as good as the available information could make it. However, the book (and its companion book on destroyers and smaller ships) does not provide any background information on the styles and evolution of Royal Navy camouflage during the war, or the guidelines and colors suggested or approved by the Admiralty as the war progressed. I recommend the four Warship Perspectives books by Alan Raven for a good description of Royal Navy camouflage styles and guidelines during the war along with a huge selection of specific camouflage profile illustrations. The book Naval Camouflage 1914-45 by David Williams provides an excellent description and summary of all the Royal Navy wartime camouflage styles and guidelines by theatre and time period. But for a comprehensive source of specific battleship and aircraft carrier camouflage patterns and colors this book is a treasure.

An Excellent Camouflage and Colour Reference

As a modeler, I appreciate good references. Finding good colour and camouflage information on British WWII warships is difficult, and it is with thanks that modellers can turn to Malcolm Wright, a well-known naval researcher. This book continues his series on warship camouflage into my area of interest, British aircraft carriers, as well as covering battleships and monitors.

Each ship is represented in full-colour side profiles and topside deck plans where Wright has enough information to come to conclusions about their colouring. Where ships changed their colours and camouflage patterns, Wright presents additional profiles so that a complete picture of each ship. class and type can be ascertained.

My only gripe is that I wish the profiles could have been presented somewhat larger.

For the modeller, wargamer and maritime artist, this information is extremely valuable and I cannot recommend this book to highly.

Cataphracti equites, quos clibanarii dictitant (A E Negin); and The Eining lorica segmentata (M C Bishop) are not in this issue, but instead you have "Klivanion revisited: an evolutionary typology and catalogue of Middle Byzantine lamellar styles" (Tim Dawson) and "A critical review of the Bishop version 1.01 Newstead lorica segementata in the wake of a prototype's creation. (L. Arik Greenberg), as well as "Reinforcing a Roman Helmet during the Dacian Wars" (David Sim) and "Pieces of Roman Military Equipment in a Roman Cellar at the Bemelerveld in Maastricht (The Netherlands)" (Bernard Van Daele).

The text is mostly written in English, with two articles in German and one in Spanish. All of the articles have excellent line drawings and B&W photgraphs. This is truly a needed addition to any collection about Roman military equipments.

Peter Havholm is Professor of English at The College of Wooster in Ohio, USA, where he teaches English literature, literary theory, and new media and has won the Sears Award for Innovation in Teaching. Emotional Rollercoaster

I was tired when I finished the book. It was one of those where I had to stay up one night to finish it because when I tried to put it down, the story kept turning over in my head. I had an honest like and dislike for some of the characters. I do have to admit that part of me kept wondering what else could go wrong as the story progressed.

The most striking thing about this book was that it is the first time that I, as an African-American, could feel the effects of discrimination against another people. The author is able to really make you feel what the characters feel. Additional kudos goes to the author for illustrating how dangerous it is to see things from only one point of view. Ever story has at least two sides.

Aside from wondering how much more hardship could possibly befall the family, I found the book to be an excellent read. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a challenging read.

Fascinating Novel of Sisterhood and Assimilation

This book had many strengths, which I appreciated a lot:
* Wonderful description of dynamics between two sisters over time
* Great historical depiction of life in Shanghai before WWII, and the Japanese invasion
* Wonderful historical details about what the Chinese experienced at Angel Island in SF, and the discrimination they faced once in the US
* Terrific depiction of the stresses of assimilation

There were some things that led me not to give this five stars, however:
* The end of the book (last 20% or so) had a lot more telling than showing, except for the last scenes which were terrific. This caused it to drag.
* I found myself skimming, because of this "telling" aspect of the prose.
* In places, I felt that whole sections could have been cut to streamline the story. This included a lot of the time in Los Angeles, which dragged a bit.
* I got the sense that many things were inserted because they were important to the author from her own childhood memories, or stories from her parents, rather than because they were crucial to the story. In particular, details about LA's old and new Chinatowns fell into this category. It was sort of like the author couldn't help herself, or couldn't let go, of things that were actually nonessential -- the various historical characters in Chinatown, the appearances of movie stars, etc. I felt See needed to show more self-discipline as a writer.
* After having loved the author's previous book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, I expected an almost perfect novel, and was perhaps more harsh on her than normal because of this.

Shanghai Girls: Great read

It was a wonderful, well written story that was very informative of life for Chinese in China and as immigrants to America. You could clearly see that Lisa See did a lot of research in writing this story to present the reader with facts of that time period from the 1930's thru the 50s. It was a story of the love between two sisters and how their separate lives tore them apart but never completely.
