In fact, here are three reasons Windows 8 owners should upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 is free

Owners of older Windows versions must pay to upgrade to Windows 8.1, but Windows 8 and Windows RT owners can upgrade to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT without charge. To download and install the free upgrade, open the Windows Store app from the Start screen. Then start the upgrade with a click or tap on the "Update to Windows 8.1 for Free" option.

It's easier to stay on the desktop

Windows 8 constantly forced people to switch between Windows 8's two personalities: the traditional Windows desktop, and the strange new Start screen and its world of touch-oriented apps.

Helpful to those new to Windows 8 and 8.1

Purchased in conjunction with a new PC as a gift for my mother for Christmas, Windows 8.1 for Dummies Book and DVD bundle has started her off on the right foot in transitioning from Windows 7 to 8 or 8.1 operating systems. I choose to upgrade her PC to Windows 8.1 (free from Microsoft) out of the box because of the security improvements and ease of use issues that were addressed by the upgrade. While subtle, they make a huge difference to those who are used to 7 and feel overwhelmed by 8's new look.

Some of the changes addressed by Windows 8.1 include:

- Ability to boot directly to desktop mode versus app interface.
- Adding back the 'Start' button in the desktop mode.
- Ability to put together more apps for easier mulit-tasking.
- Improved search capabilities system wide, integrating SkyDrive.

While none of these changes are a huge jump away from 8, they are improvements that make Windows more friendly.

In terms of a book like this one, those who are already familiar with Windows 8, probably don't need to buy this book if you already feel fairly competent at using the OS. Current users may find other books like Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual more useful.

However, if you are 'new' to the whole Windows 8 or 8.1 experience, this is a clearly written reference that will provide an easy to read book hitting on all the major learning points. The DVD helped my mother, as she is a 'visual' learner, but for some it may be unnecessary. Windows 8.1 For Dummies is the DVD-free version of this book if you simply would like to read and not watch this information.

When we first bought our new computer it had windows 8.1 After using it we found that we absolutely hated it. Tried working it and found we hated it all the more. Found that it sucked all the joy out of using the computer. We thought we would give the windows 8.1 for dummies a try. Reading this book helped us to understand the program. It worked us through all areas we had trouble with, and did it in a way that was easy to understand. We now love the windows 8.1 It has brought the joy in using the computer back

The DVD was a great introduction!

The old saying was that a picture was worth a thousand words. Well if that is the case, a video is worth a lot more than that. I've been using Windows since version 3.0, but I had been avoiding Windows 8 and 8.1. Why? Expert Paul Thurrott stated that Windows 8 is a disaster and "has set back Microsoft and Windows by years, and possibly for good." The Windows 8.1 has been called "slightly less terrible" as it did not fix many user complaints. There are still a number of annoyances, one being that the 8.1 Start button just takes you back to the Metro Start screen with colorful tiles and does not show a true Start menu with a list of programs like in Windows 7. In 8.1 the Start menu is still dead and a third party fix is still necessary if you want a Windows 7-like Start menu. There are numerous annoyances and the learning curve has been described as steep.

I finally got a new computer that came with Windows 8.1. I have to say that the Dummies DVD was a great introduction that showed a lot of the 8.1 changes and how 8.1 works (or doesn't work). It was great to see it in a video rather than trying to read instructions step by step while trying to view pictures of screenshots.

The DVD states: "The videos show you step-by-step how to use every new feature of Windows 8.1. Tackle the re-designed Start screen, use the Charms bar, organize and launch apps, and then connect to the internet, manage the Windows Mail app, and add your social media accounts. Toss in search, user accounts, and how to manage photos, video, and music, and you have the ultimate show-and-tell."

I didn't read a lot of the book. I used it more as a reference when I had a question. It seemed to offer good coverage of many topics and had a good index.

If you find that you like Windows 7 better than Windows 8.1, you can make Windows 8.1 look and function more like Windows 7. Download and install Classic Shell, a freeware Start menu very similar to the Windows 7 start menu. Then do a search for Make Windows 8.1 Like Windows 7. I never see the Metro or Modern screen with the colored tiles any more, and I haven't missed it.

About the Author
This SVA 4th Edition evolved from many years of practical experiences, training, and studies in the processes / design / verification / and language worlds. This book is an excellent reference in the process and application of SVA. It was created by four authors who came from very strong technical backgrounds, thus putting a lot of synergy in the creation of this book. Ben has many years of design, synthesis, and verification of digital designs; he authored 12 books on VHDL, Verilog, design processes, VMM, PSL, and SVA, and has taught several classes in these fields. Srini worked at Intel as a verification engineer, and at Synopsys as an application and verification field engineer; he is now CTO of CVC Pvt Ltd, a high-end design-verification consulting company, and provides training in SV, SVA, VMM, OVM/UVM, VHDL, consulting for companies, and sales representation for many EDA products. Ajeetha has many years of experience in design and verification using VHDL, SV, SVA, VMM, OVM/UVM; she is the founder, CEO and Managing Director of CVC. She has also been consultant for many EDA companies and verification turnkey projects across India, Israel & Taiwan. Lisa worked at Cadence as a methodology and product engineer supporting assertions in simulation, formal verification, and emulation. She participated in the SVA standardization work for the IEEE 1800-2009 release. She also managed an organization that was responsible for the definition, verification, and support of Telecom IC's, LAN IC's, and ATM IC's at Lucent Microelectronics. She now is a technical marketing manager at Real Intent.

Great book for engineers new to SVA or as a reference.

This book has been a great tutorial and reference for getting into the incredibly complex world of SVAs from the simplest to extremely complicated cases. I used the first and 3rd editions at work and purchased the new, 4th edition. The authors, Ben and Srinivasan, have even been responsive when I had questions about some particular SVA behavior in simulation.

Great help in furthering the transition to functional thinking.

First a warning. This is not an introduction (or tutorial) in either F# or functional programming (FP). To get the most out of this book you need to have at least a basic understanding of F#, its syntax, and how to read it as well as an understanding of what FP is and why it matters. To be sure, there is some introductory material here on both of these topics but it is a quick overview which provides a basis for the remainder of the book. It is not meant to 'teach' either of these topics.

Having said this I found this book to be an outstanding primer on the application of F# to common algorithms and data structures you run across every day in the software development world. The approach taken in this book leads you very nicely from a description of an algorithm (which you are probably already familiar with) to a 'typical' imperative implementation and then to a more FP-centric approach and how F# can be used to accomplish it. Along the way you get introduced to more idiomatic F# and come to understand how to apply the language in the ways it is best suited to.

I found the juxtaposition of imperative and FP approaches very enlightening. Even though I have been dealing with FP languages for a couple of years now I learned quite a bit and will probably be coming back to refer to this book again and again. Well done!

The only book I need for F#!

Dr. Masood's insights have played a critical role in my IT Professional life. If you're reading this, then clearly you're looking into understanding F# to a deeper level, and I can recommend no one higher than Dr. Masood for this undertaking. I find his writing clear, concise, informed, and easy to understand.

Excellent Intro to F# Language's Features and Data Structures

I am a seasoned .NET / iOS developer who is relatively new to functional programming and this is my first F# book. I really enjoyed the concise, practical and succinct introduction to F# with short-n-sweet examples. I found that the quick introduction helped me bridge the gaps in some topics I did not fully grasp and helped me understand the concepts.

This book provides a concise view of F# from a vantage point of general purpose software development. In this introductory text, author provides more or less standard collection of basic data structures and algorithms with examples. The author provides illustrations, code samples and explains the ideas thoroughly, which is evident in first few chapters where the concept of data structure and language style are still familiar and a concise writing works well. Some places are bit shallow in detail on each topic and could have been further expanded upon. The chapter quotes and interesting code examples are a nice touch.

Jon is also National Convenor of the 'Evidence, Research and Policy in Complementary Medicine' Special Interest Group at the Public Health Association of Australia, Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed journals Complementary Therapies in Medicine, Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies and BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine as well as Regional Co-Editor for the European Journal of Integrative Medicine.
GAVIN J. ANDREWS Professor at McMaster University, Canada. Gavin was the inaugural Chair of the Department of Health, Aging and Society from 2006-2011. A health geographer and predominantly qualitative researcher, Gavin's wide-ranging interests include the dynamics between space/place and complementary medicine, aging, nursing, specific phobias, fitness, health histories, popular music and primary health care. Alex specialises in the sociology of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) and the sociology of cancer and end-of-life care and he has led sociological studies of TCAM in Australia, the UK, Brazil, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Alex is currently leading a cross-cultural comparative study of medical pluralism in Australia, India and Brazil and a longitudinal qualitative study of end-of-life care in Australia.
