About the Author
Joost van den Vondel (1587 - 1679) has been described as the Shakespeare of Holland. He is the author of thirty full-length damas, Lucifer being generally regarded as the most accomplished. Noel Clark is a writer and broadcaster. His English verse-translation from Polish of the classic comedy Zemsta (Revenge) by Alexsander Fredro was broadcast by the BBC World Service.

What a shame that this has not been as revered in history!

Vondel published this work decades before Milton published Paradise Lost. Granted Paradise Lost is an important treasure of English literature, it is a shame that has completely overshadowed Vondel's work to the point that encyclopedias about angels glorify what Milton did in Paradise Lost but never mention Vondel at all.

Like Milton, Vondel wrote about the fall of Lucifer. However, unlike Milton, who wrote his story as a poetic epic, Vondel wrote his version as a play. And as a play, the story is told with the limitations of the stage. HOWEVER, also unlike Milton, Vondel wrote his version from a more orthodox point of view, ground more in with traditional Biblical theology. Milton's work is saturated with heretical Arian ideas and sometimes flat out contradicts what little Biblical tradition that we have on this subject. In addition, Milton portrays his angels more as idiots, being easily deceived by Satan. However, even with the time limitations of a play, Vondel does do justice to all of the angels, rebel and loyalist. My personal favorite moment of this play is the debate between rebel and loyalist angels in Act 3. They way their argument was written was quick, and reading it made it feel like you were reading an actual argument.

I can only imagine what it would be like to read this play in its original Dutch! As a translator, Clark did an excellent job of translating this work into a form of poetic English reminiscent of simplified Shakespearean prose.

Again, as a play, this is a great piece of fiction. However, if you want to read a version of this story in the form of an epic, read Milton. I personally say you should read both.

About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the New York Times Book Review and the author, co-author, or editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture. He is the recipient of the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement.

Louise Fili has co-authored fourteen design books with Steven Heller. Her design work is in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and she is a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame. The authors live in New York.

A richpedia of graphic, schmaphic

The two authors have scoured the rural routes of the graphic landscape to come up with 113 interesting entries for their book, from Agit retro to Zanol. If you haven't heard of Zanol, join the queue. It turns out this thirties founded company was an early style setter in having a corporate identity for its consumer product packaging and judging from the illustrations shown with the entry they probably worked, too.

The entries, as the authors rightly point out in the introduction, are their own choice for what they consider worthwhile graphic styles from the last hundred years or so. I thought the selection, at times, seems rather esoteric. What styles can be derived from the entries on Mini mannequins (seen on shop counters) Chinese calendar girls or Ripley's Believe it or not? Here they are though and it's certainly worth reading about them. No doubt readers will have their own worthwhile contributions to graphic styles missing from the book. Mine would be: Champion Papers 'Imagination' paper sample books, Twen magazine (the very influential German title) Blue Note record covers, Pentagram, Photolettering Inc and the USA Today weather maps.

The book is nicely designed but rather text heavy. I would have preferred more illustrations in a book dealing with essentially visual themes and I wish the authors had gone to the trouble of including, where practical, a suggested book at the end of each entry. There is a bibliography in the back with titles that have a generalised overview of the subject. The word conceit in the title blurb is very apposite because the book has its own conceit: finger tabs in a book of 336 pages. With so few pages the tabs have to be in three stages making it needlessly difficult to flip over the pages while using the cross references, so it gets four stars.

I found Stylepedia an interesting read for revealing lots of historical background to graphic styles that are taken for granted today. A book that complements it could be The Dictionary of Graphic Images by Philip Thompson and Philip Davenport. A reference guide with over 1500 commercial graphic items mostly designed in the forties to the seventies. Like Stylepedia it is arranged alphabetically with captions and designer credits.

A must have reference and a good read

I picked up this book at a bookstore on a bit of a whim. I hadn't looked at it much when I purchased it but when I got home and dove in, I was very pleased!

The book is an alphabetical listing of styles and design movements from victorian to today (and maybe a few further back in time). The information written about each movement/style is concise but more than enough to give you a the context you need.

The articles are short enough that this book would be a great bathroom book for your studio or even just to read one-a-day. Keep it close to your desk cause it is a very accessible reference book. Looking up stuff on the fly is easy.

I think this is a must have for anyone who wants to be informed. By knowing about style, you can use styles smartly in graphic design and the stylings will actually function as content, augmenting the messages you're trying to communicate.

This is a great book written to give an accumulation of histories of different styles of art. This is perfect for the aspiring designer who wants to look to the past to see how specific styles were created and what they focused on. I've used it for a project about Push Pin Studio's style and it helped me further understand their love for textures and crazy typefaces.

About the Author

This is THE Screenwriting Book, bar none.

This book is a 2 semester, graduate course in screenplay writing. It is the best in print. To cover so much material in a single book is amazing, and a first. Supplement it with "Advanced Writing" by Wells Draughon, "Writing a Great Movie," by Jeff Kitchen, and "Screenwriting" by Paul Gulino, and you have everything you need to write a superb screenplay. "How to Build a Great Screenplay" can stand on its own. The others will help you control your story to get every bit of energy into making a taut story. But the breadth of Howard's book stands head-and-shoulders above everything else in print. An amazing book. Thank you, David Howard. A superb book!

This book covers a lot of info; however, it seems as if some of it could be wittled away and the core of the book would still be intact. Also it seems to reference his other book way to much.

Could've been a 1 page pamphlet instead of a book!

After reading this long book filled with filler words, nonsense rhetoric and uninspiring stories...I was so ANGRY, I felt there should be a law forcing How-to-book authors to include a chapter that actually synopsis and list what you will actually learn from their books... You can probably sum up what you will learn from this book in 1 to 2 pages.

Over 400 pages to say so little... I learned more about screenplay writing from "First Time Director..." by Gil Bettman than in this book.

Mr. Howard's book reminds me of those horrible college text books written by your college professors that you are forced to read. If Mr. Howard was to tell you how to input a book title on top to search for a book here in Amazon... he would probably take 3 chapters to do it.

By the time I got to page 401, I just had to laugh... He says, "You know you can't be boring for too long, and, ideally, you want to be far from boring; you want your stories to be exciting, riveting, can't-take-your-eyes-away thrilling." - Even that sentence shows how wordy he is. How these books get publish...? I have no idea! Reminds me of people who surround themselves around people who never tell them the truth... cause if he had, I'm sure at least one true friend would've tell him the book has major flaws!

You don't learn much about the author, you learn less about the business. It's almost like he assumes his readers are total idiots. This is sad; because I'm sure Mr. Howard is a great man, with a lot to teach... and his book did not come across that way... could be the editor.

Here's a suggestion, why not try to write the book again... and this time get a psychologist to assist you to stay focus and REALLY speak from the heart? (Not an insult but an actual honest suggestion)

I would buy it, since I believe he might have something great to say, if he only stop talking long enough to get to the heart of things.

It explores the varying facets of governance and provides many thought provoking questions and debates on areas that are all critical in the governance process. This is certainly a book that provides very useful information for policy makers, politicians, students and interested citizens." About the Author
Ann Marie Bissessar has a PH.D in Government from the University of the West Indies. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad. Dr Bissessar is the author of twelve books, one of which, Colonial Administration and Structural Adjustment: The Agony of Reform ( School of Continuing Studies, 2001) argues that to a large extent the public services of many ex-colonies of Britain are trapped by their previous experiences, structures and processes. In another book, The Forgotten Factor ( School of Continuing Studies, 2002) she observes that a failure of reformers is that they neglect to consult with the middle and level public officers who best know the daily challenges and can perhaps offer some useful remedies for reforming the public services. She has to date written over fifty articles on the area of reform, human resource and productivity and has worked as a consultant with CIDA, the UNDP and the IADB. Email: abissessar@fss.uwi.tt
