Best reference book for Marshall Amps

If you own vintage Marshall Tube Amps or just thinking about buying a vintage Marshall Amp, buy this book. I disagree with other reviewers, this book is what-it-is, a reference book for vintage Marshall Amps made from 1962 to 1992. Who gives a crap about the Chicom Marshalls made from 2000 to present. I really like the section with all the glossy photos of all the vintage and obscure Marshall Amps that were made through out the years. There were some Marshall amps I had never even heard of before and I've played through all the good ones, 1971 Super Lead 100(4 input), 1978 JMP 2204 Master Volume, 1983 JCM800 2203 MkII, 1990 JCM900 2500 MkIII, and even a JCM2000 DSL100. I still own the JMP 2204 and the JCM900 2500 MkIII and will never sell them.

The History of Marshall

Since there are no OTHER books out there dealing with the Marshall amplification history this one will just have to do..for now. Sporting no glossary, and with more pictures and poorly reproduced schematics than relevant tonal references, I found myself searching time and time again for some clue as to the legendary tonal qualities associated with the individual models. None were given really. I was hoping for some help in trying to select a new or vintage Marshall amp and I couldn't find it here. There is far MORE INFORMATION available on the internet than is compiled here in this book. Copyrighted in 1993 this book NEEDS TO BE UPDATED, it's now 15 years out of date. For $33.00 I could have done without this book..although I do like looking at the pictures.

Julia provides moral support for her friend, Louisa, as they go to a slimming club meeting. They are shocked to discover that the slimming club venue has been taken over by the local amateur dramatics group.
The am-dram group are performing a play written by the enigmatic Brandon Briggs. Julia soon suspects that Louisa and Brandon have a secret past. At the next meeting, Julia finds Brandon’s murdered body hidden in a costume room.


Murder Makes A Claim
Julia agrees to cover some cleaning work for a friend. The cleaning work takes her and her colleague, Cain, to the offices of Inkwell’s Insurance in Leeds.
It isn’t long before Julia and Cain discover the dead body of Karl Rayburn, the manager at Inkwell’s Insurance. They find out that everyone has a secret when it comes to their relationship with Karl. Julia is reluctant to get herself involved. But she soon realises she has no option but to make her own enquiries to find out who the killer is.

About the Author
Dr. Rexford E. Santerre, Professor of Finance and Healthcare Management at the University of Connecticut, has taught at the college level for more than 25 years. In addition to co-authoring HEALTH ECONOMICS, he has written numerous articles for various general and specialty academic journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, Economic Inquiry, Healthcare Management Review, Health Economics, International Journal of Health Care Finance and Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, Medical Care Research and Review, National Tax Journal, Public Choice, Southern Economic Journal, and The Review of Economics and Statistics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Stephen Neun is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Antioch University New England. He previous served as Academic Dean at Anna Maria College, as Professor of Economics, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and as Dean of the School of Graduate and Extended Studies at Utica College. In addition to co-authoring HEALTH ECONOMICS, he has published articles on Federal Reserve policy and the location decision of primary care. He also has published articles on executive compensation and corporate control in such journals as the Quarterly Journal of Business, Economics and Managerial Decision Economics, and The Review of Economics and Statistics. Age has indeed withered the proprietress of London's Temple School for child actors, but custom has yet to stale her infinite, cadging variety. Freddie--born Frieda Wentworth--is Penelope Fitzgerald's most marvelous sacred monster, a woman insanely devoted to her art. Over several decades she has foiled debt collectors, creditors, and bailiffs at every turn. What matter if Freddie's Covent Garden redoubt is freezing and falling apart, her own office-cum-bedroom a haven for must and dust, mold and mothballs? When one would-be financier has the temerity to display a balance sheet, she orders him to put it away, "in the tone she used to the local flasher." After all, this force of theatrical nature can always rely on actors and theaters for desperate, last-minute donations. On the other hand, it is 1963, and the school is threatened by others specializing in film and TV training, but so far Freddie is sticking to her Shakespearean guns.

The Temple's permanent staff consists of an unskilled handyman and Freddie's assistant and dresser, the possibly malevolent Miss Blewett. Its acting coaches include a man who's made his career out of understudying Nana, the dog-nurse in Peter Pan. Needless to say, the students are not impressed. To further trim expenses, Freddie has hired two new teachers from Northern Ireland. One, Hannah Graves, is qualified; the other, Pierce Carroll, decidedly not--but Freddie hires him for other reasons: "She had heard in his remarks the weak, but pure, voice of complete honesty. She was not sure that she had ever heard it before, and thought it would be worth studying as a curiosity." These two innocents are in academic charge of the young thespians, an egomaniacal, mostly mendacious lot. (In a stage school, after all, insincerity is a good thing.) But Freddie's does house one genius: 9-year-old, unknowable Jonathan Kemp. Even his guinea pig inherits his bad luck, and is soon devoured by one of the theater district's roving felines. Jonathan seems destined to be overshadowed by Mattie Stewart (later Stewart Matthews), a showoff who at least has the grace--even if it is manifested in spurts of violence--to know himself inferior. Meanwhile, we watch Pierce fall in love, hopelessly, with his colleague. Alas, he hasn't a chance against the dissipated actor Boney Lewis, though Hannah tries not to destroy him: "At the corner, she gave him a hug and a kiss, as one does to a cousin, or to the inconsolable."

The strange world of theatre - children's theatre

What a surprising book and what a funny one. The first Penelope Fitzgerald I read and a lovely introduction to her wonderfully witty work. "At Freddie's" is life in a slowly fading London Theatre school for children. It is the 1960's and Freddie, who is the mysterious woman who runs the school, believes that children should be trained for Shakespeare and for the stage - not for the fleeting career of television and advertisements which are starting to pull children from other schools.
Into this world drop Carroll, an unsuprisable Irishman, who doesn't seem to be able to do anything. He applies to Freddie for a job as a teacher but admits he can't really teach, or in fact do anything. Freddie hires him because he is cheap and honest, and he procedes to do just what his interview shows he could do so promisingly - nothing. But he has fallen in love with the other teacher who applied the same day, Hannah. Hannah is more ambitious and wants to 'chose, not be chosen'. A dictate which runs her life. Their relationship is played out against the lives of school's precocious children, mostly the strange friendship of Mattie - a 13 year old child over-actor and the quiet, self-contained 9 year-old, Jonathon.
It was a wonderful, fun read.

A totally original character

At Freddie's may not be the absolute best of all Fitzgerald's novels (the competence is so stiff), but Freddie may very well be her most original and likeable character. If you love theater, Shakespeare, London, have a sense of humor and some respect for children's creativity for mischief, in all probability you will be as defenseless against her as all the other characters seem to be in this very compact, very enjoyable and unexpectedly moving novel . All Fitzgerald books can take us to other worlds, the world of Freddie truly deserves to be visited.

Theatrical Skullduggery

Penelope Fitzgerald is at her most devilishly entrancing in this tale revolving around the London acting school run (and I mean RUN!) by Freddie, a larger-than-life Gorgon whose will cannot be resisted. Fitzgerald has fun skewering the backstage pretentions, intrigue and petty jealousies of the London theater world of the early 1960s, but, clearly loving every seedy corner of it, she celebrates it with such gusto that you want to sign up on the spot for a season or two. That combination of wryness and fondness makes this short novel among Fitzgerald's most satisfying. And when Freddie goes out looking for a pound or two, hang on to your wallets!

Text Analysis Explained to Biologists

This book was written to help biologists manage the flood of literature in their profession. Online search tools help some, but not enough. Text analysis, "the process of discovering and extracting knowledge from unstructured data," can help with this literature tsunami. Biologists--and researchers in related disciplines--can use the tools and techniques of text analysis to identify relevant documents, extract useful information from them, and discover new relationships between these hard-won nuggets.

Sophe Ananiadou and John McNaught have assembled a collection of chapters written by experienced text analysts. They cover the primary subareas of text analysis with little overlap. These chapters are well-documented, use examples from biology, and explain them well enough to make the book accessible to non-biologists. After a concise introductory outline in the first chapter, readers become familiar with the general techniques of natural language processing, the various research communities using NLP techniques, and the tools and other resources they have created. Subsequent chapters cover terminology management, abbreviations, named entities (think "proper nouns"), information extraction, and corpus tagging. The final two chapters discuss how text analysis techniques are evaluated and how results are integrated into structured data analysis.

The clear explanations and accessible examples make this book a reasonable first read for anyone curious about text analysis. Although readers need not be biologists, some familiarity with scientific inquiry is helpful. I found the chapter on evaluation of text analysis methods most useful. It explains the role of challenge competitions in advancing the field and describes the common evaluation metrics well enough to facilitate understanding of the research literature. All chapters include numerous web links to software tools, data sources, and relevant research groups. This is a particular strength of the book, and helps readers bridge the gap between text analysis as it was in 2005, and as it has become since the book's publication.

It is recommended for scientists who want to learn about text analysis by observing it's practical applications in biology. Readers preferring a "straight" introduction without the biology might turn to The Text Mining Handbook: Advanced Approaches in Analyzing Unstructured Data or the last chapter in Data Mining Techniques: For Marketing, Sales, and Customer Relationship Management.

Wanna' Make Comics? Start Here...

I brought an advance copy of this book into a college illustration class I teach. The class was quite impressed. In fact, two students went onto Amazon online and bought it instantly. Usually I discourage shopping during class, but Drawing Words and Writing Pictures is an answered prayer for the aspiring comics artist.

This is an ideal text for a 15-week class in comics. It also has guidance for starting an informal collective class. It includes suggestions for the stereotypical solitary artist, who the authors are gracious enough to refer to as ronin. There is a wealth of info on the narrative process, page design, lettering, pens, and even Photoshop scanning advice.

The authors' individual web pages present a lot this DIY info, so search out their sites, see if their philosophies appeal to you. The book contains multiple perspectives from two remarkable artists. Matt Madden is into "formalist" styles, working within Houdini-like constraints. Jessica Abel's La Perdida is one of the great masterpieces of the long-form graphic novel.

From George Herriman to Robert Crumb, Charles Burns, to Kaz and John Porcillino, the book is crammed with a diversity of styles. Wide-ranging and inclusive, no matter what one's preferred comics style, from manga to superhero to alternative, you will find something to like here.

Instructors will find the bibliography alone is worth the price of admission, I teach a seven-week college comics course each fall. My plan is to email the students over the summer, tell them to get this book and get started on the exercises. The ronins will get a head start and their classmates will lose face.

Scott McCloud's Making Comics is also a valuable college course text for serious students, who have some background in reading comics and thinking critically about the artform. Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, however, has practical exercises for students at any level. Highly recommended.

Don't miss this one.

I've bought just about all the "How To Draw Comics" type books out there, and they are mostly pretty mediocre. They have some good info in them, but leave many more questions unanswered. This is definitely the best of the bunch, especially since it talks about much more than just the drawing part of comic creation. Panel design, inking, lettering, etc. is all in here. The presentation and writing style is nice and it flows well.

The only real complaints I have about this book, were mentioned by one of the other reviewers, and I have to agree: 1) there is a LOT of wasted space in this book, where the print and/or pictures take up like half or 2/3 of the page. And 2) the type face is a little small. This wouldn't be such a problem if the books dimensions didn't make it a little unwieldy and big. So, the impressive page count isn't as impressive as I previously thought. If they fixed those two problems, I'd most likely give it 5 stars.

Problems aside, this is definitely not a book you want to pass on. Check it out and I'm sure you'll be pleased.

A Welcome Addition to Your Collection

I am a BIG fan of both Abel and Madden's work. I go to BOTH of their websites several times a month and "La Perdida" and "99 Ways To Tell A Story" are part of my collection of graphic novels.

This book is great for high school & college art teachers who want to teach sequential art to their classes. I believe the content is particularly suited for art majors that are interested in the finer points of visual narrative. And you can tailor your curriculum around the chapters if you so choose. If you want to use these for middle school kids I think simpler steps need to be added. I like the fact that people can form groups: "Nomads" OR go do it alone: "Ronins" and follow the lessons independently.

This book is NOT bad.

All the chapters and lessons are made to be studied in sequence and if you are an old timer to comic art you can easily skip to other chapters; which I did alot. A seasoned pro will probably go to the chapters that interest him/ her the most. One chapter that I REALLY like was called "Black Gold" the chapter on using and inking with a brush.

The other chapters on page layout, panel construction, character design,
facial features/ figure anatomy were VERY good.

My ONLY complaint was the layout of the book. My [web]comic artist collegues & I felt there was TOO much white space waisted on each page, the typeface was too small and that neon orange color used throughout the book distracting. It was hard to read and strained the eyes.

Plus being a webcomic artist myself I wanted to see MORE about using the computer for making comics. It covered scanning, re-sizing, adjusting your line art in PhotoShop, etc. The chapter on lettering was good; but they tended to downplay the use of COMPUTER LETTERING. They make a STRONG point in favor of HAND LETTERED comics; but it would have been nice if they address lettering on the computer as well.

My Suggestions:
A. Read the book cover to cover.
B. Do the Exercises. I am in a NOMAD group; plus I'm doing the RONIN thing as well.
C. Do the Homework.
D. Go back to your favorite chapters again and again.
E. Cross reference this with OTHER books on how to make comics.

This book is a welcome addition to any comic artist's arsenal of graphic narrative/ sequential art references. Use it along with books by Will Eisner & Scott McCloud and you'll be fully versed in the Language of Comic Art.

Organic Functionalism

Weston appears to do a very fine job presenting us with the various perspectives of the Villa -- the large living room, entryways, linear wood use, and of course the extraordinary pool and sauna. The integration of text with pictures makes the book accessible to students just beginning to embark on a study of this great Finnish architect.

Remember the Phaidon Press among all Publishers!

Villa Mairea is a very specific home building in Finland. It could be described as an outstanding but descent statue of the golden National Romantic Era, when Alvar Aalto (much alike Frank Lloyd, e.g. in his Fallingwaterhouse) was relatively free hands to plan a house in the "best spirit" of the time.

The house was possessed and occupied by the descendants of the relatively large Ahlström family, which is famous for various industrial activities in Finland. Few people (150 000?) had opportunity to visit the place when it was open for publicity from time to time several years ago, but as a surrogate for such an experience this books gives an excellent overview. The pictures and drawings of the home and its environment are very clear and professionally prepared, and what is most important, the proportionally short introduction to the cultural milieu or atmosphere of the time is covering enough for readers, who have been interested in architecture, but have not yet acknowledged the greatness of Alvar Aalto.
