A uprated version the 1B carried the first crewed Apollo flight into orbit in 1968. The Saturn V, which first flew in 1967, was a three-stage rocket. The first stage, which burned RP-1 and LOX, consisted of five F-1 engines. The second stage used five J-2 engines which burned LOX and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The third stage, based on the second stage of the Saturn 1B, carried a single J-2. The Saturn V could carry up to 262,000 pounds to Low Earth Orbit and more critically, 100,000 pounds to the Moon. Created by NASA as a single-source reference as to the characteristics and functions of the Saturn V, this manual was standard issue to the astronauts of the Apollo and Skylab eras. It contains information about the Saturn V system, range safety and instrumentation, monitoring and control, prelaunch events, and pogo oscillations. It provides a fascinating overview of the rocket that made “one giant leap for mankind” possible.

Excellent deep over view of The Saturn Five plus

I am an Aerospace Engineer that worked on the Apollo program at the Kennedy Space Center starting since 1970. I have a copy of the original NASA document that was the basis for this book. I can verify this this book is a very good reference book for the Saturn Five vehicle as well as the Apollo Spacecraft and the KSC facilities which were used to prepare the vehicle for flight. I am currently a Docent volunteer at the Kennedy Space Center Apollo Saturn Five rocket. I take my document with me to verify or refresh my memory while I am performing my Docent function.

Flight manual covers Apollo 8 launch vehicle

This flight manual covers the configuration for Saturn V launch vehicle SA-503, flown for the Apollo 8 mission. All the Saturn Vs flown and currently on static display have minor internal and external variations for each launch. For example, the ullage rocket fairings on the S-IC/S-II interstage (first/second stage) were originally 8 on the first two flight vehicles (Apollos 4 and 6 (SA-501-502)), then reduced to 4 for Apollos 8-14 (SA-503-509), and removed completely for Apollos 15-17 and Skylab 1 (SA-510 throug SA-513; 514 and 515 never flew and became static displays). It won't detract the casual reader at all, and it is recommended for any space buff's library.

Learn all about the thousands and thousands of systems that made the Saturn V the most powerful and amazing rocket in history. Nothing else I have found comes close so if you want to know what the Apollo astronauts had to learn then this is the book for you!

Solid handicapping marred by glaring errors

William L. Scott, Total Victory at the Track (Amicus, 1988)
The late Scott concludes his handicapping trilogy with Total Victory at the Track, a book that both builds on his two earlier works (Investing at the Racetrack and How Will Your Horse Run Today?) and introduces another concept that ties them together. While Scott's work isn't bad, and the foundations upon which it lays are solid enough, there are some blunders in here that a novice wouldn't make. Whether to blame Scott or his editors is an arguable point, but the effect is the same; a novice coming into this book is going to pick up some bad information indirectly. My advice: buy this book if you're experienced enough at horseplaying to know how to read the Daily Racing Form's past performances and result charts, and be on the lookout for the errors. They are everywhere.
That said, the methods outlined here are certainly solid ones, as the workout in the back of the book shows (I'm doing my own testing on it, since these things seem to change on an almost daily basis in the horse biz), and while Scott isn't promising rose gardens, nor enough money to buy the land and plant the roses, it would seem that what he offers is at least enough to turn losers into break-even types or winners, if they're willing to do a little work to get there. It just seems that the path might be a little easier to follow without the glaring Daily Racing Form-related errors that pepper the text. ** 1/2

Total Confusion

This book, the third in the Scott "Investing at the Track" trilogy, is the flimsiest yet. One, it abandons much of the safe, statistically-backed theory of the first two books in favor of newer ideas that are only supported by a few hundred race samples, and are curiously not shown to be more effective based on the ORIGINAL race samples (which might be more convincing). Two, it tempts the reader to venture into much riskier plays than ever before (where admittedly, more profits can be made, but at greater risk and greater uncertainty). And three, it is rife with "judgment calls" in all facets of the computation of performance class ratings, running lines, etc. And, once you start asking the handicapper to lump almost ALL past performances into the formula, without regard to the PPs' track conditions or even surface in most cases...it's hard to make such a leap of faith.
The beauty of the original Scott system was its simplicity. This new method is a morass of "add this, subtract that, divide that but only when there's a full moon..." It also adds to the bookkeeping necessary to make it work while you're actually at the track. All the calculations and comparisons can't easily be done in the Racing Form, rather a notebook and calculator are necessary for close scrutiny of all the numbers for each rated beast.
It's very hard to get a grip on the calculations, let alone the new selection criteria.
Still, there is a bright side: in some preliminary testing against some recent races that were also handicapped using the old method, the new method seemed to do better. It took a day's racing with the old method that featured a disaster at one track and a reasonable profit at another, and turned in windfalls at both, using the new method.

Neuroscience has become a rapidly expanding young science that relies on a number of other sciences and their methods. For that reason it is a truly interdisciplinary and inter-methodological undertaking of much fascination to many. In this spirit, this book attempts at presenting an overview of the techniques currently used in modern neuroscience research. By doing so, it is also an introduction into neuroscience itself, from the angle of methods available to tackle prevailing questions. Many questions can only be answered by combining methods borrowed from different fields. Building on this insight, this book's organizing principle is the investigation of levels of the nervous system, from molecular and cellular to whole organisms. The reasons are twofold. First, certain organizational levels can be optimally studied and potentially understood only by applying an array of diverse techniques. Second, it is important to avoid succumbing to the danger of pure technicality, which might arise from ordering the description of techniques according to their inherent principles of coherence (e.g. staining vs. electrophysiological techniques). In addition, this book aims at providing a direct working tool for the user in the laboratory and clinic and thus addresses all active neuroscience researchers, from graduate students to supervisors. The main emphasis in terms of layout is on detailed step-by-step protocols including personal tips and recommendations. Most chapters or protocols are organized so that they can be used independently. Brief but helpful

Forty-five neuroscientific techniques are presented in this book. One full chapter (on average 29 pages each) is devoted to each technique. Obviously, you will not learn everything you need to know about each technique, but these chapters serve surprisingly well as crash courses. When I started learning about how to do imaging experiments, Chapters 4 and 16 were the first things that I read, and I found both to be tremendously helpful. I flipped through several other chapters and they seemed pretty good, too. If you can afford this book, it's not a bad addition to your bookshelf. It could come in handy someday. The CD-ROM makes it easy to search for specific information in the text.

About the Author
John B. Nici has a master’s degree in art history and is retired from teaching at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, New York. He is currently a Professor of Art History at Queens College in Flushing, New York. In 2004, he was the recipient of Queens College’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty. He has published extensively on art history pedagogy and has presented and published scholarly papers on topics that include Byzantine Art, Gothic Art, and Delacroix. He is the author of Famous Works of Art―and How They Got that Way.

Great book, would be better in color

The content in this book is great and is backed up by both the information given by my art history professor as well as various textbooks. Most of the time the works mentioned in this book seem to be highly relevant to the AP curriculum. It is slightly bothersome that the book is printed in black and white, though I understand that this is a cost-saving measure. Because it is an art history textbook, I believe that an exception could be made in this case because color is relevant in some of the artworks. Also, not relating to the book, it would be great if Barron's would make flash cards with the artworks. (And why does Princeton Review not publish a review book on this subject?!?!?)

Great for lazy AP Art History students!`

I typically buy my AP books early so I copy more notes in them throughout the school year. This book does a good job of showing the bigger picture throughout art history, and having in depth analysis of important works throughout each time period. Some of the time period might be a bit brief, and it doesn't talk much about art beyond the european tradition. It also doesn't have any specific information about the artists personally. So overall, a must have for art history students, and probably the best AP prep book for Art History out there. But you DEFINITELY will need more material than provided in this book.

I like this book and it gives you a lot of information to study for the test. The information is kind of bland. I think that the annotated mona lisa is a better study guide book.

Great book

I love this book it includes 3 of my favorite things grayscale, Alena lazareva artwork and fashion. I love to color clothes and people. Let's me get creative. I like ve her art and the people on this book. I have recieved this a few hours ago and colored a few so far and I'm so happy with this book. As always it is on one sided paper and is very high quality I can't wai till she comes out with another one. I really enjoy this kind of art and I hope you enjoy this one too. But you should also check out her other books. Funny animals and fantasy kingdom. She has 6 in total and I love them all

I received my copy of this book a few days ago, and I love it!! I can't wait to start coloring it, but I have a few projects ahead of it. You won't be disappointed Update - I just finished three pages, and I used pan pastels on everything except her eyes, lips and nails

Very nice illustrations without a lot of gray!

I really like this one because there is not as much gray as usual. The only thing missing are perforated pages. Otherwise, great book! I have done what I consider the hardest page in this book, as I had a problem trying to cover the gray and have shown it below. Please remember that this is the HARDEST page for me to do! My first consideration with grayscale images is the ability to cover the gray and this one was difficult. I'm still trying to figure out what that shadow is over her shoulder, have no idea! Overall, the book is GORGEOUS!

In a Silent way: A Biography of Joe Zawinul by Brian Glasser

This book is a "must have" for any fans of Fusion or Modern jazz music. It details the extraordinary life and career of JOE ZAWINUL, probably best known as co-leader of the influential Jazz/Fusion band WEATHER REPORT. There is extensive input and recollection from many famous names past and present from the jazz world and the author has left no stone unturned in tracking down these superstars for their oppinions about a personality who always left a mark on their playing and careers. Mr Zawinul himself also has a lot to say about some of his associated musicians and there is some revealing and forthright words about his times with MILES DAVIS. WEATHER REPORT were very much a "musicians" band and to this end the book is written in a way that musicians will be very at home with...there is detail of recording sessions, song structures and even technical information on synthesizer set-ups. This may not be appealing to the general public but their interest is easily engaged with all the other stories of the love/hate relationships that the feisty Joe Zawinul formed with his contemporarys. A sure sign of a genius at work.

extraordinary life, but not an extraordinary book

Joseph Zawinul is arguably one of the more interesting cultural figures of the 20th century, perhaps the only non-American to have a profound effect on the music that we call jazz. Author Brian Glasser argues that this book is a "portrait" rather than a biography, aiming for emotional truth over factual specificity. Whatever the intent, the book views Zawinul very much through the prism of his music with the emphasis on the subject's musical career and very little on his life beyond music making. It is not an authorized biography in the sense of after giving Glasser several interviews, Zawinul apparently withdrew his cooperation, forcing Glasser to cobble together much of the book from previously published interviews and accounts. The result is a certain unevenness to the story - aspects of Zawinul's childhood are covered in a fair amount of detail, but in contrast it is only mentioned in passing that at a certain point Zawinul was married and had a family; later, we again learn in passing that his wife is named Maxine, that she is African-American, similarly the names of their children crop up sort of randomly etc.
In some respects this is not a major drawback - the emphasis is rightly on Zawinul's music, and many (most?) readers will already be acquainted with the basic facts of his life. Yet, it would appear to be an extraordinary life, and it is a pity that it is not the subject of a more polished biography.

Greatest book buy in the last five years

Exceptional piece of work: the life of one of the most respected musicians on the entire globe. It's well conceived, well told and the life of the man is amazing "per se".

We find the very early remembrances, since the second world war period, the approach to the piano, the first experiencies with other jazz musicians; then the strong determination that led Joe to cross the ocean and start his magical trip with Dinah Washington, then Cannonball Adderley, his friendship with Coleman Hawkins. Dug the chapter reporting when he said "...not yet" to an astonished Miles Davis (!) and perhaps the most intriguing part: the collaboration with Wayne Shorter and his own considerations about Jaco Pastorius and his contribution to Weather Report; then about his perfect mixing with black people, the marriage with a black woman, his "beige" children (as Davis said!) and his deep and intelligent take on the musical world and keyboard technology. Keith Jarrett says that "the only intelligent thing one can do with a synthesizer is just throwing it out from the window". Joe Zawinul is 180 degrees away from this: when he plays he is basically playing his old accordion, only technically more complex. To better understand this book and the important contribution of the man to the development of the contemporary music, one must buy and listen deeply at least the following CDs: Joe Zawinul, (Weather Report's) Mysterious Traveller, Sweetnighter, Heavy Weather, 8:30, Night Passage, Black Market, (M. Davis') In a silent way. Then you can buy more!!!
