Longbow is the first book in the Saga of Roland Inness series.  I actually began telling this story to my two sons when they were middle and elementary school ages, but as they demanded more adventures from my hero Roland, I found it too hard to spin a coherent tale of this length right from my head.  So I began to write the stories down and it became a bit like an old Saturday matinee serial.  After several months of weekly installments, I went back and looked at what I had done and it struck me that I had the "bones" of a book. With considerable effort, those "bones" became Longbow.   The second book in the series, Warbow, was published in January, 2015.  That novel takes Roland and his companions to the 3rd Crusade, where Roland sees the ugly face of war and tests his mettle, while back in England, Queen Eleanor tries to preserve the throne for King Richard against the machinations of Prince John and Sir William de Ferrers. 

About the Author
Wayne Grant grew up in a tiny cotton town in rural Louisiana where hunting, fishing and farming are a way of life. Between chopping cotton, dove hunting and Little League ball he developed a love of great adventure stories like Call It Courage and Kidnapped. Like most southern boys he saw the military as an honorable and adventurous career, so it was a natural step for him to attend and graduate from West Point. He just missed Vietnam, but found that life as a 2nd LT in an army broken by that war was not what he wanted. After tours in Germany and Korea, he returned to Louisiana and civilian life. 
Through it all he retained his love of great adventure writing and when he had two sons he began telling them stories before bedtime. Those stories became his first novel, Longbow. Longbow is the first book in the Saga of Roland Inness trilogy.  He is well along on his second novel, A Knight for Kinder Scout, which takes Roland and his companions to the 3rd Crusade and back again to England. It will be published in the spring of 2015.

Longbow: Excellent read for young and not-so-young

Longbow is intended for young folks, but as others observed, those of us in the older generations also found it quite enjoyable. Wayne shares fascinating firsthand views of both the history and the customs of the day. Roland's thoughts and biases about the Normans, Saxons, Irish, Scots, and Danes were especially interesting. I also enjoyed his tying in the coronation of Richard and the upcoming Crusade. Those boys and men going off to war were as motivated and fearful as they are today. The inclusion of Tuck and Robin (commented upon in the author's notes at the end) was just plain fun. No doubt, Wayne's research was thorough and valid, and the stories about the interaction among the complex social classes helped me understand life in the day. But it continued to be entertaining--something my history teachers never mastered.

Each character was thoroughly developed. It would have been easy for the author to include "cardboard cutouts," but we didn't see any of that. While everyone identifies with Roland, all characters were fully human and as good or as bad as we see in the world today. Culture and technology have changed in the last millennium, and Wayne demonstrated humans have not.

Excitement and suspense were interspersed at the right intervals. We hoped (maybe we knew) Roland would survive, but witnessing how he pulled it off each time was a pleasure. All fiction requires a degree of happenstance, but Longbow was quite believable.

As the full title suggests, we'll see Roland and his buddies in other books having further adventures. I'm a fan and will read each one. It's good to see a young person's book that does not include vampires! There also was a notable lack of adolescent love affairs. Roland had an obvious stirring so we have to believe Millie will reappear in later books.

Well written, tight, exciting, good story - real characters - a fine read!

This is just one heck of a good read! I have to say, I was a bit dubious when a friend recommended this book to me. I figured it was just something for "young adults", which I am not and haven't been for decades. But, my friend, an Army Ranger, wouldn't shut up about it, so I decided to give it a quick read. I'm glad I did!

While the lead character may qualify as a young adult, the story is not of that limited appeal. It's just a great, exciting tale and an easy and fun read. Lots of action and thrills and suspense. A fine story that flows well, will catch you up, and won't let go. Well done, very well done, indeed, on the story front. But, unlike some authors who can put together a good story but can't draw a character or script a line of believable and natural dialogue, Grant can do both, as well.

Character dialogue in novels set in past times can sometimes be a real problem. I can tell when it's not being done well when it distracts me as the reader. Often I've found it to be too tortured and affected, trying too hard to sound like maybe that's the way folks actually talked back then. (One "forsooth" will sink it for me.) Other times, it's 'way too modern, or just has too many modernisms included to get away with it. Either way, when I start noticing the dialogue, as such, there's a problem. Good dialogue seems to slide right in, as natural as can be, and doesn't distract. Grant does just that. I was well into the book, captured by his story, before I remembered that I wanted to consciously focus on his dialogue. I wanted to check that out because, first, I know I could never do it well; and, second, I know that when done right, it's a sign of a very good and skilled writer. So, then, I spent some time looking into it and found that he has just the right balance of old and new. It works and it works seamlessly and effortlessly.

Another aspect of the book that was a pleasant surprise was the character depth and development. Again, I had this dismissive idea of "young adult" which I wish I'd never heard concerning this book. (While it's perfectly appropriate for young adults, it's just as interesting and entertaining for anyone. More on that below.) Anyway, I was expecting these two-dimensional, standard cookie-cutter, formulaic characters, like pretty much everything on TV and in the movies these days. Again, a very nice surprise. Grant clearly put in a lot of time and effort in crafting his lead characters, beginning with Roland, but it was especially surprising to see that his secondary characters (Millicent, Declan, Sir Alwyn, and Catherine come to mind) have individual depth and catch the reader's interest too.

Finally, I think it helpful to note that this book is "safe" for anyone, of any age, to read (or to have read to them). Yes, there's some violence and some bad guys (and the occasional good guy) who get rough treatment, but Grant doesn't make it overly explicit gore, blood, and guts. Not the stuff of nightmares, though it is quite exciting and suspenseful. Plenty of action. Language is perfectly acceptable, proving that you can write a good story, filled with good characters, without having to cover up mediocre writing by dropping distracting and unnecessary F-bombs right and left.

So, in summary: well written, tight, exciting, good story - real characters that develop and grow and ring true - a fine read. I recommend it highly.

Well worth reading

I picked this book up through Kindle Unlimited. Many of the offerings in the Kindle Unlimited are self published and unfortunately self edited too. Not the case here, this book was well written, grammatically as well as factually.

The characters were well fleshed out, the plot moved at a good pace and frankly, it was difficult to put this book down. I practice primitive archery as a hobby and the information about the longbow presented is fairly accurate in its construction, history, and use. Longbow is one of the few pieces of fiction I have read that accurately present archery.

This not just a good book for boys, it is a good book for all. I look forward to Mr. Grant's next addition to this series.

Can you say Hawt?

I found this book by accident and it was the best accident I have ever had. The passion has off the charts. The best scenes were even hotter. Not intended for under 18 or those who cannot feel the pleasure in pain. The storyline was well written, she shows love has to limits whether it be for a parent or those we love. This book had me crying, screaming and wanting to rip my hair out. I was for the first time in awhile saddened to have a book end. Sexxa is a wonderful addition to the author community. She has found herself a true fan.

Grades 4-7--"Life isn't always fair," the team's sponsor tells 13-year-old Joe "Stosh" Stoshack after an umpire errs in calling him out during the Louisville Little League Championship. To reinforce his message, Flip tells the boy about the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, when gamblers allegedly paid Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other members of the Chicago White Sox to throw the World Series. They were expelled from baseball for life, but Flip contends that the illiterate Jackson was innocent. What Flip doesn't know is that Stosh can time travel into the past via old baseball cards. He goes back to 1919 to try to save Shoeless Joe and meets him shortly before the fateful payoff is about to be made. The criminals are out to make sure that nothing interferes with their profits and are willing to kill the boy if necessary. Antique photographs, baseball cards, and news clippings add to the authentic representation of the time. Action is intense and exciting, both on and off the baseball field, and there are touches of humor when Stosh mixes up his own era with 1919. The story evokes strong sympathy for Jackson, and an endnote suggests that readers write to the Baseball Hall of Fame in support of his induction. The fourth in a series, this novel is an intriguing melding of sports history and science fiction that should be a hit with middle-school readers.

Gr. 4-7. Gutman's well-received Baseball Card Adventure series features Joe Stoshack, the 13-year-old narrator who can travel back in time by holding a baseball card. When an umpire's bad call results in a loss for Joe's team, he is furious. But when the team's sponsor tells him that "life isn't always fair," and illustrates the story of Shoeless Joe Jackson, the boy decides to head back to 1919 and make things right. Young Stoshack's experiences are certainly varied: he spends the night with Jackson and his wife, unexpectedly walking in on her naked not once but twice. He overhears crooks plotting to fix the World Series before he's imprisoned and nearly shot by them; he meets long-dead relatives and tries to cure one of influenza. The story ends with Joe back home. Although he was unable to fulfill his initial purpose, his trip has changed history in other ways. The book ends with Gutman's impassioned plea for readers to join a campaign to clear Shoeless Joe's reputation. A not-quite-believable, but still highly enjoyable time-travel adventure. Unnecessary Inclusions

I was looking for a book to use in my fifth grade classroom at school as a part of our reading curriculum. This was a recommended book, so I began reading it. At first, I loved the book! It is well written, witty, and right on grade level for my fifth graders. Then I turned the page to read how the main character sees Joe Jackson's wife naked. This happens more than once, and is not going to fit as a read-aloud book with fifth grade boys. Crude words for going to the bathroom and a reference to the main character in just his underwear are other reasons I can not completely recommend this book. It had such potential, but I feel the negative inclusions in the story have ruled it out of my thoughts for using it. Sad.

A Baseball Hit!

Baseball fans here comes a new hit! It's called Babe and Me and it's got baseball, time-travel, and mystery all rolled into one. This novel is about a boy named Joe Stoshack and his Dad. They live in Louisville, Kentucky in the 1990s. This pair are big Babe Ruth fans, and like most other fans, they are DYING to know if he did call his famous home run on October 1, 1932. Unlike others, they have a secret. Joe can travel to any time on a baseball card by holding the card for 30 seconds! So they travel back to the Depression and watch the famous game.
This novel has a moral too. Joe learns tht behind the glory, Babe's life isn't perfect like you'd think it would be. He has troubles like any average person.
So if you like baseball, fantasy, or even history, read Babe and Me. It's a novel most baseball fans won't want to miss.

Call It What You Will

In this third book of the time travel series, young Joe Stoshack touches Babe Ruth's 1932 baseball card, and journeys back to Wrigley Field in 1932. His goal is to see whether Ruth really did "call his shot," that is, point to the outfield stands just prior to hitting a home run there. Joe's angry, divorced, recently laid-off father sees the trip as a money-making opportunity (by betting on know outcomes, accruing 70 years of interest, and obtaining Ruth-autographed baseballs to sell when they return to the present).
This well-written book will appeal to all baseball fans, especially its audience of kids around 7 to 12 years. Gutman obviously loves the game and its lore, and he vividly recreates 1932 Chicago. It's a very good history as well as sports book, as Gutman describes (aided by newspaper clippings and photos) such topics as segregation, the Depression, and the arrival of German Fascism. At times, Gutman is a little too sentimental, especially when describing the eventual (and predictable) family rapprochement, and there's a somewhat simplistic nod to the Holocaust.
The main appeal is its depiction of early baseball and the larger-than-life character of the Babe.
Although Gutman exaggerates some of Ruth's grandiosity (which the author points out in an afterward), most of the book is factual. Gutman's researched his subject with sources such as the Society for American Baseball Research and the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Baseball Center. There's also a terrific section featuring contemporaries' opinions on the called shot, and a 2-page summary of Ruth's batting and pitching stats. These are inspired ideas, that, again, show Gutman's skillful weaving of fiction and fact.
This book offers much more than the usual sports fiction for kids. The family dynamics, the historical references, and the awesome presence of the Babe, Lou Gerhrig and other Hall of Famers are a winning combination.

About the Author
E. B. White (1899-1985) was an American author and long-time contributor to the New Yorker. He was the author of more than seventeen books of prose and poetry and coauthor of the English language style guide The Elements of Style but is especially well-known for his beloved children's classics, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1973. He won numerous other awards and medals, including a special Pulitzer Prize for his body of work in 1978 and the 1971 National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, which commended him for making ''a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.''

A fascinating look at the greatest city

E.B. White was a very accomplished writer. His books and essays are some the best literature we have. His short book "Here Is New York" provides a good example of his gift as a generator of beautiful prose. He wrote this piece in 1948 and as the writer of the introduction, Roger Angell states White confronts the task with the knowledge that what he writes at his time will not endure because the city is ever changing metropolis. White likes to write with a heavy use of metaphor and he constantly anthropomorphizing what the city of New York has to offer us. He speaks of three basic types of individuals who spend their day in the city: the commuter who never really gets to know the city, the native individual who takes the city for granted and the ones who move in later in life who are in love with the city and enthralled with it's bill of fare. I enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to hear him speak of the boroughs that have evolved with the city. If he were to write the essay today I think he would be dismayed by the further disappearance of the places that he cherished and yet he would continue to express the belief that it is the greatest city in the world.

Not a book, but a good essay

As a New Yorker who grew up there in the 70's the essay is a fine piece, but this is NOT a book. It is a magazine article at best. Unless you want it for your bookshelf, and it will be lost among thicker volumes, you can just as easily find the text online or in your library.

Style, Truth, Prescience

Early to a party, I was looking at a friend's bookcase and pulled this slim volume from a shelf. After reading the first sentence, I knew I had to have it.

Originally published in 1949, E.B. White, who no longer lived in New York City, captured the soul and spirit of the place. Nothing has changed. At the time, the United Nations building was under construction, and the bombing of London was fresh in his mind. He ends the book with a vision that perfectly balances hope with danger, in words prescient of September 11 - I re-read those paragraphs on every anniversary, it has become my ritual.

But what originally drew me to the book is not only the truth and insight of White, but his style, his felicity of expression. The author of "The Elements of Style" certainly knew the rules, and knew when to break them, as well. The second paragraph ends with a run-on sentence 198 words long, a thrilling joy ride which itself demonstrates how impossible it is to capture, in prose, the enormity and importance of this city.

I agree with Russell Baker, this is "the finest portrait ever painted of the city."

Excellent designs, layout could be a little better

[[VIDEOID:c9e4c44e2eb0d7bb01f553bfa4711fbe]]This coloring book contains a nice variety of designs birds, butterflies, dragonflies and flowers. The designs are pretty and done with large clear lines. There is a total of 31 different pictures and 65 pages. For each images there are three pages of text. I like the designs, but I did not like that back of the image is not a blank page but the text with an inspiration saying which are visible. If you want to transfer the design to another piece of paper with a lightbox to keep the book clean or to use designs as a templates for other crafts (stainless glass or quilting) the text makes it difficult.

The paper take pastel pencils very well. Wet markers do bleed through a bit to other side of the page. The designs are well suited to coloring - they do not have a lot of shading of their own (if there is a lot shading it makes difficult to color). None of the design are too small to introduce coloring.

I like the templates for the bookmarks with designs at the end of the book. The page on the the bookmarks also had writing. So if someone wanted to cut the bookmarks out they would have a pretty design on one side and cut up text on the other side.

Overall, beautiful designs. The change I would make it leave the back of each design blank and have less text overall.

Let loose and escape reality for a while while sipping on your morning espresso!!!

This is the first time I have ever seen a color book with inspirations and designs to warm the heart. I myself like to draw and doodle. I am not drawing to impress, turn a profit, or for anybody other than myself. In the past, I used to draw for certain people for gifts. When I gave these gifts they were from the heart and soul. In which I mean each picture color and thought was a part of myself. I discovered when I gave these gifts many people would take them and years later I would find them in the garbage. This was a time, I realized for me it was best to draw or paint for myself or somebody who understood me. It's a wonderful way for self expression and helps to create a way for releasing tension and other psychological issues. I think these color books are very nice to help release untapped talent, and maybe understand yourself better with little words of inspiration to move you along. So pick up your pen and allow yourself to soar. Either keep for yourself or give to that special person. I truly believe these books help many people psychologically as well as physically. Perhaps, you'll be surprised in more ways than one. Great job to the artist for the pictures and idea of something that can touch so many people.

AMAZING COLORING BOOK FUN DESIGNS AND QUOTES!!!!!!

I ordered this book because of the large print and the large pictures. i am slightly visioned impaired, this book allows me to create, color, and relax.I really like that each design is on a seperate page with a doodle test page in between each design. I was able to color with markers without the marker going through to the next design. I think if you purchase this book you will be very pleased with it..The book is well put together with beautiful designs with quotes that made me smile.

Susan G. Shumsky is the author of Exploring Meditation and Divine Revelation. She has practiced yoga, mediation, and other self-development disciplines for 35 years. For more than two decades years, she resided in remote areas, including the Himalayas and Swiss Alps, under the tutelage of an East Indian enlightened spiritual master. She now travels internationally, continually presenting seminars, retreats, and tours to India and other sacred sites.

Some false information being given

The preview lured me in. When I got to the part concerning Kechari Mudra the author writes that it requires several surgeries to the tongue to achieve.

As someone who has achieved Kechari Mudra without cutting the tongue I emphatically go on the record as stating cutting the tongue is NOT necessary. Practice Talabya Kriya as outlined in Ennio Nimis book and you can achieve it in a short period of time for me it took only 3 months. Just do an internet search for Ennio Nimis and Kriya you will find it swiftly.

This book also is not indexed correctly if you buy it via Kindle edition be ready to go through every page in it to get to a search phrase or word.

2012-12-23 I have found time to read more of this book and it is better than my original 3 star review so I bumped it up to 4 It may still go to a 5 star review we will see. Book formatting is still bad even on a kindle Paper White.

Part of a body of Work

I bought this after reading 2 of her other titles 'Divine Revelation', followed by 'Miracle Prayer'. I found her so interesting that I bought another 4. She's the author of 7 books at this point. Having said all this, I have only skimmed this one. I found it quite as interesting as the rest, at least what I have read so far and fully expect to learn a good deal. It's because of the excellence of her other work that I have scored this high. Susan brought 'New Thought Christianity' to my attention, something unknown to me. It's a school of thought and spiritual practice. Apparently its first advocate was Swedenborg and there followed several hundred years worth of others that included Emerson. She is thorough and reads with clarity, something of an accomplishment given the rather hard-to-define fields she writes about: e.g in 'Ascension', the transmutation of the physical body to light through a progressive divinisation. Her school of thinking is sympathetic in my view, with 'A Course In Miracles', though whether she would agree I don't know. She's serious, draws well on wide life experience and has something to offer. Her body of work is something of a resource and I think for some people could be a contribution to their exploration. And it's not just cerebral, she's nothing if not about direct personal experience and cognition. There are people who will disagree with these views, but that's life isn't it.

She's done it again :)

Once again Dori Lavelle has stunned me. Just a few pages in I wanted to throw this book at the wall I was so mad at the characters. That's not the only emotion this book will.give you. I sat there and cried, laughed, got angry you name it but it kept me on my toes. There's twist in this that you.never see coming. Anyway I'm going on and on that's how excited.I was to read Defining Moments. If you like supense on you the edge of your seat and What the heck moments read this and the rest of the series you won't be disappointed.

Strongly recommend you read this book..I loved it!

Melisa has seen too much sadness, felt too much grief and despair and lost hope many times in the past but she has always managed to fight her way back to happiness only for it to be taken away again. Finally married to Heat, her first love, Melisa felt that life had, at last, started showing happiness to her and maybe, just maybe she had overcome all her difficulties but just as she is trying to reconnect to her long lost son and find peace with Heat, her first husband whom she had buried years ago comes back to haunt her. Will Melisa be able to come back unscathed this time or is this event the final straw in pushing her over the edge of despair and hopelessness?

There is so much happening in this book. While you are enchanted by the beauty of the cover which gives the soothing feeling of that first honeymoon and makes us sigh in anticipation of the next holiday that we have planned, the blurb also makes it difficult not to get intrigued by the story.

I have loved all the previous books in the Moments in Time series but without doubt this one is my favorite. While you can read Defining Moments as a standalone, I will advise you to read the books in order so that you are able to know the characters' history.

The story is new and fresh. Dori throws well calculated and strategic twists and turns that make the reader gasping in surprise and totally invested in the book till the end. Even after finishing the story, I felt like I was still inside the book and could still feel the happiness of a well deserved happily-ever-after that Melisa and Heat got.
Dori's writing style is simple yet very fresh. She keeps the readers' interest maintained in the story and also manages to keep us hooked til we have finished the book. It is a record with her that I have had to finish all her books in one sitting! The settings, people and the emotions; all are so admirably and expertly developed and portrayed that everything looks real and I felt like I was right there seeing and feeling everything felt by the characters. I cried, laughed, felt angry and then pissed and finally liberated with Melisa and Heat. I felt angry with Scott first and then sorry for him. Melisa and Scott had a good life which he threw away.

The characters in this series have become like family to me. They feel connected to me. I feel their pain, their happiness and their strength to endure all difficulties and yet seek happiness. Kudos to the author for creating such memorable and real characters that will stay with me forever.

All in all, this is one of my favorite books and I strongly recommend this series as well as Defining Moments to you. 5 on 5 to it from me and I hope to read more from Dori in the future. She is a talented and promising writer and now on my list of favorite authors. :)

I LOVED IT, A STORY OF LOVE AND 2ND CHANCES

Loved It!!!!

I was fortunate to win a ebook copy from Dori Lavelle

This is a story of love, compassion forgiveness and the strength of hope.

Melissa and Heat have had a rough beginning but now in this story they are happily married, pregnant and couldn't be happier but faith has other plans. A ghost from the passed has comed back Scott... a husband that was lost, mourned and buried.

Melissa is going through a hard time accepting Heats decision and questioning her fellings for him after a great lost when Scott comes back looking to see the child he left behind.

I felt in love with this story I cried along side melissa, its showed me just how much strenght there is in a person after not just one but several great lost , heats love for melissa gave her the strength she need it and he never lost hope in her. And after many tears they found their happily ever after.

IF YOU WANT A STORY THAT MAKES YOU SMILE, CRY AND FEEL THE STRENGTH OF LOVE.
