About the Author
Jeffrey C. Kinkley is professor of history at St. John's University in New York. He is author of "The Odyssey of Shen Congwen, Chinese Justice, the Fiction: Law and Literature in Modern China," and "Escape from the Law."

Shen Congwen (1902-1988) is one of the most influential writers in China's modern history. His novel Border Town was banned under Mao's regime, only to become an inspiration to a new generation of Chinese writers in the late twentieth century.

A Superb Collection

Often overlooked in favor of the more explicitly political of his contemporaries (most notably, Lu Xun), Shen Congwen's work is richly textured, complex, and lyrical. Shen is a writer who brings the China of his past and present alive without the overburdening and unreal pressure of trying to save it. Nostalgia breathes through his pastoral countryside scenes, and his urban landscapes reveal a fractured, paradoxical consciousness--both unsure and hopeful. In many ways Shen plays the anthropologist to Lu Xun's politically ultra-conscious social engineer. And in this sense he seems more real to a modern reader. He approaches his subjects without judgment, and with much less baggage. While others try to give life to Chinese society through social change and self-criticism, Shen simply and beautifully reveals the life that is already there.
The translations in this edition are smoothly rendered and very readable, although the edition suffers, I think, from its diverse group of contributors. Without the unifying vision of a single translator it is difficult to achieve a continuity of style and substance. But all in all this collection is a tremendous addition to the English-accessible literature of modern China. Shen is brilliant and poetic, but in a subtle, understated way. The entire collection is infused with a cocktail of profound nostalgia for the past, hope for the future, and, most of all, the beauty and innocence of the living present.

Not Extremely Memorable, But Well Done

My mother purchased this book for me as a very young girl, along with other collections of short-stories, and I remember being enchanted with it. The legends are fascinating, although I don't think the fact that they were all about young women and girls ever crossed my mind (an observation that leads me to believe this book would be good for boys, as well).
I recently re-read the stories, and was delighted. I remember being confused as a girl, since the places, people, and customs are mostly foreign, and so I wouldn't recommend these books to any one younger then six. And even then, with the lack of pictures, it's great for adults to read to kids (no matter what age, within reason). Worth the money.

This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

Girls who can

It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

Its a concise book and deals mostly with the Monte Carlo simulation technique as used in semiconductor device modeling.
Chap 1 and 2 provide the groundwork,chap 2 in fact lists most of the scattering mechanisms with their mathematical formulations,the equations derived therein are later used for developing fortran codes.There are fortran codes scattered all over the book and the appendix includes a full code too.

Anyone who wishes to use Monte Carlo simulation for device modeling could use this book as a starting point.The list of references given are to an extent comprehensive,most of the papers suggested appear in the publications of the American physical society or published by Elsevier and are precursor to the current level of device modeling.

This book shall make a good reading, though the price at $128 may be on the higher side.
