A Great Textbook

I really love this book. My professor can be a bit scattered, so a book this focused helps keep me on track. The book goes through major groups of viruses and the mechanisms through which they work. Very detailed but manages to stay interesting.

I've been reading some of the chapters that are not required for class. It's just that interesting.

Best book ever

I first came across this book when I studies for my Bachelor degree at the university of Toronto. We got to use the 2005 pre-publication version and I have been using it throughout my MSc studies and even PHD. I even use the old version now a days. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to have a good overview of any of the virus families.

In The Machine That Changed the World (1990), Womack and Jones, along with Daniel Roos, lauded the manufacturing technique used by Japanese automakers, known as "lean production" and also as the Toyota Production System. Lately, though, some critics have argued that "lean production" has been used as simply an excuse for downsizing, and recent books, such as David Gordon's Fat and Mean (1996), have questioned whether corporate trimming has been effective at all. Undaunted, Womack and Jones argue their case anew. They now move beyond "lean production" to propose "the lean enterprise" and describe the successes at 25 U.S., Japanese, and German companies that have effectively implemented the "lean principles" of value (as defined by the customer), value stream, flow, pull, and perfection. Good Conceptual Overview of Eliminating Waste in Producing

Unlike most cost-reduction books, Lean Thinking has a strong conceptual underpinning for thinking about improving your operations. The authors move beyond the narrowest application of the lean manufacturing model (the original Toyota system) to explore key concepts like value (what do the customers want? as opposed to what do they choose from the limited options we give them?), flow (continuous production is faster and more efficient than batch processing), pull (letting immediate demand determine what is produced rather than sales projections), and perfection (thinking through the ideal way to do things, rather than just improving from where you are today somewhat). Providing this conceptual framework makes it easier to understand the benefits of operating a lean enterprise. People who did not understand the message in Direct from Dell would find Lean Thinking to be a useful framework.
One of the strengths of this book is that it is deliberately full of examples of companies which took traditional methods in existing plants and converted them into lean operations. I know of no other set of case histories half as useful on this subject.
The key limitation of this book is that most people new to lean manufacturing would not be able to implement solely using the book as a guide. The conceptual perspective, while being uniquely valuable, leaves the inexperienced person with few guideposts. Some of the key requirements are simply described as "get the knowledge" and so forth. As a follow-up, I suggest that the authors team with those who have done this work and write a hands-on guide. Much more benefit will follow.
If you are interested in understanding how a new business model of how to provide your products and/or services might work and what the benefits might be, Lean Thinking is a good place to start. Most executives and operations managers have never seriously considered going from batch to cell-based production. This will open your eyes to the potential.
Based on my many years of experience with improving business processes, you will actually need to go visit some of the companies cited to fully understand the issues and what must be done. I know that visits to Pratt & Whitney can be arranged and are very insightful. You might try to start with that one.
One area may turn you off. The cited examples moved forward pretty ruthlessly. That may not be your cup of tea. You may be reminded of some of the early reengineering. My own experience is that such changes can be done in a more positive and constructive way. Stay open to that possibility as you read the cases. They basically all use command and control to create more flexibility. You can also use other methods like those encouraged in The Soul at Work and The Living Company to create these kinds of results. Keep that in mind.
I recommend that everyone who uses batch and sequential operation methods read this book. It will open your eyes to great potential to grow faster and more profitably.

This book was definately informative. Lean thinking is revolutionary in approach. The text reviews a lot of success stories. Would like to see another text that gets more into application, answering questions like...How to set up a kanban system..or How to accomplish quick changeover of machinery.
Would recommend this book as a good starting point!

Smith II presents a social and political history of Roman Palmyra, the oasis city situated deep in the Syrian Desert midway between Damascus and the Euphrates river. This city-state is unique in the ancient world, since it began as a humble community, probably no more than an isolated village, and grew--due in part to its role in the caravan trade--into an economically powerful, cosmopolitan urban center of Graeco-Roman character that operated outside of Roman rule, yet under Roman patronage. The book therefore focuses on two aspects of Palmyrene civilization during the first three centuries of the Common Era: the emergence and subsequent development of Palmyra as a commercial and political center in the desert frontier between Rome and Parthia (and later Persia), and the "making" of Palmyrenes. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone. The history of Palmyra's communal development would be wholly obscure were it not for the archaeological and epigraphic materials that testify to Palmyrene achievements and prosperity at home and abroad. These, complemented by the literary evidence, also provide insight into the relatively obscure historical process of sedentarization and of the relationships between pastoral and sedentary communities in the Roman Near East. In addition to examining Palmyra as a frontier community, the book will move beyond Syria to explore the development and maintenance of Palmyrene identity in diaspora settings in Italy, north Africa, and Europe. This study is thus concerned with the creation, structure, and maintenance of Palmyrene identity and that of Palmyra as an urban community in a volatile frontier zone.

The ancient Palmyra: A rich culture lost in the desert

This is a well-organized book that discusses the ancient history of Palmyra located in Syria. In 2015, this city drew considerable attention due to the destruction of its historic strictures by the Islamic State.

The author discusses several key issues related to the growth and development of Palmyra which includes; growth of the local tribes, tribal and family structure, urban development, the city and countryside, Palmyra as a religious and economic center, mapping social identities, the civic institutions, the military, trade and foreign services. This is a short focused book, well researched and readable. Helps one to understand the current situation in Palmyra from a historical perspective.

A brief summary of the book is as follows: Palmyra is well known for the ancient Temple of Bel also known as the Temple of Baal. This was consecrated to the Mesopotamian god Bel, worshipped at Palmyra in triad with the lunar god Aglibol and the sun god Yarhibol. This ancient city formed the center of religious life in Palmyra since 32 A.D. At the height of its prosperity, the population in the region may have reached around 150,000 to 200,000 in second century A.D. But the city population may have been from 40,000 to 60,000 people. Palmyra attracted large number of migrants from nearby regions for its shared religious association and the economic opportunity. In the early days, Palmyrenes had formed an expansive commercial and social network that extended from Rome to South Asia. They were buying exotic goods from India such as silk, aromatics, and spices and reselling them to Romans. For almost three centuries, Palmyrenes never lost their cultural integrity and distinctiveness. The Roman Empire progressively increased their influence on Palmyra from the first century A.D. In the third century A.D. Palmyra became a Roman city and brought into Roman provincial network. It was granted the institutional status of colonia. The historic monuments and structures at Palmyra withstood the ravages of war during Roman Era, invasions from Parthian Empire and Persians. Yet it retained its cultural identity for 2000 years, but it did not withstand the onslaught of Islamic militants. The region had become Islamic during the first millennia when much of the Arabic tribes in the Middle East became Islamic. Although the region was active from 32 B.C to the end of third century A.D. The archeological evidence does not show any influence of early Christianity on Palmyrenes although Palmyra was only about 250 miles from Jerusalem.

The ruins of Palmyra were considered best among the preserved monuments and structures until they were destroyed by the Islamic State in August 2015. In a push of ethnic and religious cleansing, the cultural diversity and religious tolerance that once stood for nearly two thousand years in Syria were annihilated.

This book includes many pictures of the ancient city; the plan of city of Palmyra, the aerial picture of the city covering all the ancient architectural ruins, and the temple of god Bel; the Great Colonnade, the sanctuary of Bel in the temple precinct, sanctuary of Baalshamin, the temple of Allat and the Great Colonnade leading to the temple of Bel, the monumental arch of the colonnade, aerial view of the Valley of Tombs, various assortments of Palmyrene tesserae that includes a priest of god Bel. My favorite pictures are the aerial shots of the ancient city; they are simply spectacular. All the pictures in this book are black and white; I wished they were in color. But the color pictures are available online, just Google search or look in Pinterest, there are many great pictures of the ruins of Palmyra.

Great Information Inside

I'm a bit fascinated with dentistry and I'm glad that I had this book to understand more about it. Thanks Jessica for providing a well-researched information. I especially love the images that are provided inside because I didn't really expect that. If you want think that dentistry is something you can do in the future, this is a good book to begin with. Not what I was expecting

I don't think this "book" was written by a dentist. It is poorly written and contains information I could have just found on Wikipedia. It also has a billion typos and looks like it wasn't edited at all for grammar etc.

Bought this book to prepare for certified somm test. Good for theory but does not help w tasting or service part of exam . I did not pass the service part because I don't have restaurant experience. The service exam is a grilling by master somm . Book does not prepare you for that

Author in need of an editor

Incredibly, this text is the standard course work for the Court of Master Sommeliers Certified and Advanced examinations. This book is packed full of typographical errors, terrible maps and dubious assertions. From the state of this material, I can hardly believe that this is the third edition. By comparison to wine references that were written in the past, contemporary wine journalism is advanced, authoritative and relatively unbiased. One need look no further than the excellent texts written by Jancis Robinson or James Goode to find superb examples in this genre. This book would find itself very quickly at my local thrift store, if it were not for my upcoming examination. Its primary usefulness should be considered as an outline to the scope of the testing involved in the certification process.
